JoAnne was the daughter of the late William Wheeler and Anna Pearl Hill Huneycutt and has always resided on the former site of the Morgan Academy on land that was deeded to her family in the 1600's. She is survived by her daughter Angela Pearl Helms of Edwards, Colorado. Mrs. Helms is also survived by two nephews and one niece: Wayne Huneycutt and his wife Diane and their children of Monroe, William Wheeler Huneycutt of Tucson, Arizona, and Dorothy Ann Huneycutt Shepperd and her husband Mike and their family of Marshville. In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her only brother Bill Bayne Huneycutt.
JoAnne met her husband J. Parks Helms through an introduction from Parks' niece Elaine Medlin High who was also one of JoAnne's best friends. JoAnne and Parks were married in New Salem Presbyterian Church on June 26, 1954. JoAnne and Parks made their home for 54 years together in New Salem, N.C. until his death on April 14, 2009.
JoAnne earned her Associates Degree from Wingate College and her Bachelors Degree in Home Economics from Kansas State University. Her career then led her to Bethel High School in Stanly County, then many years at Mt. Pleasant High School, then she returned to Union County to implement a Career Exploration Pilot Program in the Southeast Region. After many successful years in the Career Exploration Pilot Program JoAnne returned to Piedmont High School and then on to East Union Middle School until her retirement in 1993 after 30 years of educating the youth of our area.
During her years of retirement JoAnne loved to travel the world with her husband Parks. JoAnne also loved to work with her flowers in her garden and enjoyed spending time with her pets Millie, Billy, Cream Puff, Fossie Sue, Nosey, Bogey, and Putter their granddog. She loved her church, and with her husband Parks coordinated the Senior Adult Ministry of Euto Baptist Church and took pride in helping with the decorating committee. She also worked tirelessly with the Extension Community Association and volunteered as Treasurer of the Cooperative Extension Education Through Travel Program. She was also a member of the Retired Teachers Association. Throughout her life she took great pleasure in entertaining her friends as well as her husbands business associations.

Angie,
Mom and I send our deepest prayers up for you during this time. I lost my dad when I was 27 but I can't even begin to imagine what you are going through with the loss of both parents. You are loved and being prayed for by each member of our family and our church. Your parents were very inspiring people and sought after the Lord and His purpose. I'm sure you continue to exude that same strength and courage from our high school years that they instilled into you. Just remember, 'the eternal God is our refuge and underneath are the everlasting arms.' God bless you!

JoAnne loved to travel and did so right until she died. I loved her enthusiasm for seeing new places. JoAnne was always ready to do something. I have many fond childhood memories of her. She was a dear friend to my mother as Angie is to me. She will be missed. Thank you Angie for bringing her out last summer.

I enjoyed a lot of good memories growing up & as an adult with both Aunt JoAnne & Uncle Parks & of course, my wonderful & precious cousin, Angie. I will miss the both of you but know that my mother & all the others already in heaven have welcomed you to the Master's glorious home. Angie was blessed to have these wonderful parents & the faith & love for God that they both had will help you Angie as you go through the rest of your life. I love you & my girls love you.
