John Carlton Obituary

John P. Carlton, Jr.
NAPLES, FL -- Mr. Carlton, 88, poultryman, sailor, died October 15, 2004 at the Frye Regional Medical Center in Hickory, NC.
He was the husband of Nata E. 'Garland' Carlton for 61 years.
Mr. Carlton was born in Green Creek Township, NC. As a youth, his family traveled throughout the South cutting timbre with portable sawmills. He graduated from high school in Enfaula, AL. During World War II, he was a Master Sergeant stationed at Fort Tatten, NY and then with the Army Corps of Engineers in the Army of Occupation in Germany.
After the war, he settled in Bridgewater, MA where he raised chickens. His company, G.D. Poultry, Inc., was the largest broiler farm in the state at its peak. He also had related operations, including a feed mill, hatchery and egg farm.
After Bridgewater, he retired to Marion, MA until 1989, when he moved to Naples, FL. Mr. Carlton was active in church and Masonic affairs, and town politics. He was a member of the Moorings Presbyterian Church of Naples, FL.
Always fitness conscious, he was an avid tennis player. His passion was sailing on his sailboat, 'La Sirena'. He held his captain's license and taught U.S. Power Squadron classes.
Surviving besides his wife are two sons, John Carlton of Chatham, MA and Dr. Richard A. Carlton of Hickory, NC; a sister, Margaret Edwards of Spartanburg, SC; and four grandchildren.
Services will be private.
Memorial donations may be made to the charity of one's choice.
Bass-Smith Funeral Home is assisting the family.
