My first memories of Mr McCaskill begin at Sardis Presbyterian; he was my Sunday school teacher and always a fixture in the choir and leadership of the church. Like so many others that grew up here I worked for a brief time at Belk. He was a pleasure to work for and a southern gentleman in every way. I know he will be missed.

Mr McCaskill meant a lot to me when I started working at Belk downtown in the 60s. I admired him so much. He was the finest man! It means a lot to me to have known him. Guy Byerly was my father and he also thought a lot of Mr McCaskill and enjoyed working with him.

I met John when he first moved to Charlotte from Atlanta. We met at Excelsior Masonic Lodge. I was an usher in your wedding and we have remained best of friends since that time. So sorry for his passing. Will always remember John for the fine man that he was.

I met John in 1968 while selling shoes at Belk. He was a real gentleman. I told him that I wanted to be a police officer. He told me that they were very pleased with me and wanted me to stay at Belk. I was an officer in Charlotte for 30 years and never for got how nice he was to me. RIP.
