Mabel Horne Obituary

Mabel
Ruth Harrington Horne
WADESBORO -- Mrs. Horne, lived 80 wonderful years. She provided strength, courage, joy and happiness to her family. Her Lord saw fit to take her home with Him and now her spirit shines eternally over her sons.
Mabel Ruth Harrington was born November 3, 1929 in Polkton, NC, a daughter of the late Jonah Dock and Annie Ruth Hill Harrington. She was a 1947 graduate of Polkton High School and a 1948 graduate of Charlotte Beauty School. She was well known for her long career as a beautician, spanning fifty-four and one half years, which started at Myrtle's Beauty Shop and then later owning and operating Horne's Beauty Shop. During this time, she did quite a few 'heads of hair' and never repeated the gossip overheard among the chairs. She was blessed to have a wonderful client base and remained steadfast to them all. There were times in her career that would require her to be a traveling beautician, taking care of her patrons in their home or in the local nursing facilities. She told her sons, 'I have always loved doing hair, especially cutting hair'.
During her career, she met, Claude William Horne and they were later married on May 2, 1959. To this union was born two sons, Claude Alan and Michael Henry Horne, which remained the 'apple' of her eye for her life-time.
Their mother was a strong, courageous, decent and moral lady, who had the sweetest smile offered to everyone she met. Her most gentle and tender touch was evident in the rearing of her sons.
A lady of strong faith, this walk began in her younger and growing years as she attended Poplar Hill United Methodist Church, Mineral Springs Baptist Church and Polkton Baptist. She later became a member of First United Methodist Church, Wadesboro and shared a long fellowship there.
Mabel was a great cook and gardener. She enjoyed canning and freezing the summer vegetables for winter holiday gatherings. Her fresh coconut cakes were a hit for school bake sales and were sold when she walked through the door, not to mention her wonderful ham biscuits she shared with many Ansonians.
In April of 2002, Mabel was very instrumental in the opening of the new family business, Michael Horne Florist. This business began from the ground up with her love and support. She enjoyed working there with her boys, going on deliveries, assisting the customers and being the official inspector, making sure there were the right amount of flowers and if the arrangement was balanced.
She enjoyed spending time with her sons on beach and mountain trips, shopping, rides through the countryside, spur of the moment decisions, dining out, but most of all just spending time with each other.
In addition to her parents, her husband, Claude William Horne, her brothers, Jonah Dock, Jr., Vernon, and Eugene Harrington, preceded her in death.
She leaves behind to cherish her memories, her loving and devoted sons, Alan and Michael Horne of the home; her sisters, Avis Harrington Smethie and Ann Harrington Nelson both of Wadesboro; her sisters-in-law, Anita Horne Parker of Charlotte, Virginia Harrington of Alexandria, VA and Peggy Harrington of Hamlet; her nieces and nephews and their families, including, Bill Smethie, Jr. of Harrington Park, NJ, Barbara Smethie Griffin of Columbia, SC and Becky Smethie Darling of Warner, NH.
Also surviving are two very special first cousins who were more like sisters to her, Dot Tyson of Wadesboro and Betty Griffin of Wingate.
Alan and Michael are grateful to God for the loving and devoted mother He blessed them with. They will always remember her constitution, smile, encouragement and most of all her unconditional love. There will be a happy meeting in heaven we know, with our loved ones below, gathered on the blessed hilltops with hearts all aglow, that will be a glad reunion day.
Mabel's family would like to express their sincere gratitude to Dr. Lisa Bracey-Cash and her staff, Gay Lookabill and the caring and devoted staff of Heritage Hills Living Center who made such a remarkable difference in their lives while she was a resident there.
There will be a service of worship celebrating the life of Mabel Horne 11:00am Wednesday, December 2, 2009 at First United Methodist Church, Wadesboro with Rev. Robert Rollins, Jr. and Rev. Marvin Tyson officiating. Interment will follow in Anson Memorial Park.
The family will greet friends tonight (Tuesday) from 7:00pm until 8:30pm at Leavitt Funeral Home.
Memorials may be made to First United Methodist Church, directed to either the beautification fund or the organ fund, 118 E. Morgan St., Wadesboro, NC 28170, or to the American Diabetes Association, 222 S. Church St., Suite 336 M, Charlotte, NC 28202. We loved our mother and we think you would have too. Michael and Alan, I know how hard it is to lose your Mama. My Mama passed away in 1985 and she was 85 years old. I still miss her so much. And I always see things that remind me of her or hear something that I think I would like to tell her. I really know that you never get over losing your Mama. But I do have so many wonderful memories of her as I am sure you two do of Mabel. I always liked your Mama. I went to her and Claude's wedding. And of course the two of you were the apple of her eye. She loved you so much. And you were both so good to her and loved her so much. I am so glad you were a close and loving family.
Love you,
Clara Ann Gathings

Alan & Michael,
My thoughts & prayers are with you in your time of grief. May your memories bring you comfort.
Alan, I still remember the good 'ole days at Bill Capels when your mom would cook TACOS and bring to us on Saturdays when we had to work those long hours. They were delicious! Taco Bell couldn't touch her tacos.
I'll always remember her as a very sweet lady with a beautiful smile who loved her sons dearly.

There will never be another lady so special as Mabel Harrington Horne was to so many people for all these years. My mother, Mary Frances and her has been friends for more than 55 years that I know of. Ms. Mabel always had a kind word and a smile to go along with it. If she couldn't say something good about a person she just wouldn't say anything at all. She has done so many heads of hair during these years and she probaly lost count. Now she can take care of all the others that has gone on before her and she will be waiting for the ones left here behind one day.
Alan and Michael stay strong, hold your thoughts close to your hearts, remember the wonderful years that you had her. May you each find strength in the memories and in each other in the days, months and years ahead.
Love,

I remember your Mom so well as a young child & then as I was older. I usually saw her whenever my family visited Wadesboro. I often went to her Beauty Shop with my Grandmother, Virginia Gaddy. I loved visiting with Miss Mabel. My Daddy (Charles Harrington, Betty Griffin's brother), was another cousin to Mabel. Mabel's heart of gold and warm smile will be remembered by everyone that knew her. May the memories you shared with her bring comfort to you all. You are in my thoughts and prayers.

With warmest regards,

Alan and Michael, My heart goes out to you. This saddens us, but just think of my Mom and yours greeting each other in Heaven. (My Mother probably said "Thank goodness you're here, I can't do a thing with my hair!) Your Dad and mine have been talking since they got there! And one day it will be a great reunion for us all, just keep believing and staying in the will of our Lord and Master. God Bless you both.
