FOREST CITY -- Mrs. Marguerite Huntley Thompson, age 89, of Webb Drive, Forest City, N.C., died Friday, January 21, 2011, at the Fairhaven Home. She was born October 31, 1921, the daughter of the late Oscar Thomas Huntley and Sallie Banner Jones Huntley. Marguerite was preceded in death by her husband of 64 years, Edward Calton Thompson, Sr. She is survived by one son, Edward Calton Thompson, Jr. of Forest City, one granddaughter Anna Thompson Hardin and her husband Phil of Ellenboro, one grandson Edward Calton Thompson III and his wife Melissa of Forest City, and three great-grandchildren, Edward Calton Thompson IV, Sarah Robbins and Laura Robbins. She is also survived by a number of nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her sister Peggy Doggett and her brother Paul Jones.
She was first employed with Roses Dime Store from 1934-1936. Marguerite was the co-owner of Ron & Eddy's Restaurant in Forest City for 57 years. She was prominent and visible in her business. She was a member of the North Carolina Restaurant Association, where she and Ed were also executive board members for over 40 years. She was a member of the Forest City Lioness Club and an honorary member of the Forest City Lions Club. She was a member of the First Baptist Church of Forest City. Marguerite was a devoted wife, a doting mother and a loving grandmother. She was known by many for her great sense of humor and her love for a good joke or funny story. She was also known for being honored by her father by his planting of an evergreen tree in her name at what became the downtown fountain park.
Funeral services will be at twelve o'clock noon, Monday, January 24, 2011 at the First Baptist Church of Forest City, with Dr. Barry K. Keys and Dr. George Thompson, of Charlotte, NC, a nephew of Marguerite, officiating. Visitation will be from 10:30 a.m. until 12:00 in the Family Fellowship Hall. Interment will follow in the Cool Springs Cemetery. The family asks that in lieu of flowers, donations be made to Hospice of Rutherford County, PO Box 336, Forest City, NC 28043; the American Cancer Society, 6000 Fairview Rd, Suite 200, Charlotte, NC 28210; or the Alzheimer's Association, Western NC Chapter, 31 College Place, Suite D320, Asheville, NC 28801.
