Melvin Morris Obituary

Melvin S. Morris, 55, of Charlotte passed away November 1, 2002 at his home surrounded by his family. There will be a memorial service to celebrate his life 2:00 p.m. Monday, November 4, 2002 at St. Stephen United Methodist Church with the Rev. Andy Lanford and Brandon Dirks officiating. The family will greet friends one hour prior to the service at the church.
Mel was born October 23, 1947 in Raleigh, NC, son of the late Jack and Elizabeth Utley Morris. He moved to Charlotte in 1954 and was a graduate of South Mecklenburg High School in 1966. Mel attended King College and obtained an associate degree and then graduated from UNC-Charlotte with a degree in accounting. From 1968 to 1971 Mel served in the United States Army, stationed in Schwaebisch Hall, Germany in the 15th Combat Aviation Group. Mel was a self employed Certified Public Accountant, and was a member of the NCACPA and the AICPA, being licensed in both North Carolina and Florida. In 2001, Mel merged his practice with Walker, Neill, and Wurst. Mel was a member of St. Stephen United Methodist Church and was active in the Joy Sunday School Class. He loved spending time with his family, golfing, cooking, and restoring classic mustangs.
Mel is survived by his wife of 23 years, Susan Byerly Morris, of Charlotte; his two sons, Adam and Blake both of Charlotte; sister, Betsy Grooms and her husband, Jack of Charlotte; brother, Tom Morris of Tega Cay, SC; and many nieces and nephews.
The family would like to extend a special thank you to Ddr. John Mahoney and the staff at Carolinas Hematology-Oncology Associates and Hospice at Charlotte, especially Amy Sloop.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to St. Stephen United Methodist Church, 6800 Sardis Rd., Charlotte, NC 28270 or Hospice at Charlotte, 1420 E. 7th St., Charlotte, NC 28204.

Mel was such a special person. He was the accountant for Risk Management Group when I first met him. Turned out to be a neighbor and a fellow shopper in the grocery store. He surely added a lot to this world.
