Meredith Margaret Allen, 60, passed away peacefully on Thursday, August 23, 2018 at home, surrounded by her family. Daughter of Blake Houston Allen and Jeanne Harris Allen, Meredith was born on September 13, 1957 in the Odell community. The fourth of five children, Meredith's childhood in the countryside fostered a life-long kinship with animals, particularly horses. Meredith enjoyed entertaining, often planning dinner parties to shower love upon her friends and family. Treating her nieces and nephews as her own children, she doted on each, participating in meaningful and memory-building events. Her active lifestyle was marked by a variety of sports including tennis, sailing, paddle boarding, and biking. Living life to its fullest, Meredith was almost childlike in her pursuit of joy. She was most content when on the water. A mechanical engineer who was passionate about education, Meredith shared her enthusiasm for engineering at the national, state, and local level. She often volunteered to bring hands-on engineering activities to children to promote sciences in the next generation. Meredith was preceded in death by her parents and her brothers, Philip Blake Allen and David Thomas Allen. Survivors include her husband Paul Settlemyer, sister Jeanne Allen Ezzell and brother-in-law Larry Stephen Ezzell, brother Mark Houston Allen and sister-in-law Sandy Falkner Allen, and sister-in-law Mari Ann Christy Allen. In addition, she leaves behind a large, loving community of aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces, nephews and friends.

Services will be held at Davidson College Presbyterian Church on Monday, August 27th at 3:00 p.m. The family will receive friends at the Congregation House at 2:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers, memorials can be sent to www.dcpc.org 100 North Main St. P.O. I was "raised" with Meredith in the Odell community and have known her for as long as I can remember knowing anyone. We were classmates and graduated from High School together. She was a "good soul" and my life was truly better for her having crossed my path in life. Peace be with you.

I had the privilege to work with Meredith at CRS Sirrine many years ago. She proved to be among the brightest and best. I am truly very saddened to learn that Meredith has left us, and may I pass on my deepest sympathies to all her family and friends. I will remember you in my prayers.

Worked with Meredith at Areva and shared good conversations about NC State and other things. Always fun to talk to and upbeat about most things. The only female on our hall kept us guys on our toes, those were good days.

We are neighbors. Meredith would come home from work and see my boys shooting hoops in the street. She'd walk over and shoot baskets with them from time to time; talking with them about sports, encouraging them and recollecting the days when she played basketball. My boys loved Meredith - she was a light, full of grace and love; frequently doing kind and generous things for our family - never seeking recognition or praise for her giving spirit. She's truly missed - but all around us. We can feel it. Rest in peace xoxoxo
