Michael Race Obituary

Michael Douglas Race CHARLOTTE - Mr. Michael Douglas Race, 57, of Charlotte, passed away on Monday, December 17, 2012, at Iredell Memorial Hospital. Visitation for family and friends will be held on Thursday, December 20, 2012 from 1-2PM at Calvary Church in Charlotte. Services in celebration of his life will begin at 2:00PM in the Chapel of Calvary Church. Interment will follow the service at Magnolia Memorial Gardens. Michael was born on February 18, 1955 in Binghamton, NY, son of Marilyn Race and the late Douglas Race. Michael was a long time resident and fixture in the Village of Oyster Bay and Cove Neck, where he spent many hours at his favorite spot at Ninos pizza with friends. Michael would walk miles into town from his home despite being legally blind and would not let anything hold him back. Michael had a sharp mind and wit, and loved talking politics and watching WWE wrestling and ball games (especially the Mets). Michael was very social and never met a stranger. He was a loving son, brother, uncle and friend to all and will be deeply missed by all who knew him. Survivors include his beloved mother; Marilyn Race; sister, Susan Blumenthal and husband Jay; brothers, Gregory Race, and Jeffrey Race and wife Corinne all of Charlotte; nieces, nephews, other family members and friends. In lieu of flowers memorials should be made to the Metrolina Association for the Blind, 704 Louise Avenue, Charlotte, NC 28204. Arrangements are in the care of Heritage Funeral Home, Weddington Chapel. An online guestbook is available at www.heritagefuneral.net.

I am so sorry to learn of Mike's passing. we met in high school and were in touch over the years. While life wasn't always easy for Mike, he had a strong desire to live it to the fullest and to make each moment count. May his indomitable spirit serve as a guide to us all.

We will always remember Mike for his humor, his incredible ability to remember details, and his ability to recognize a voice after years of not hearing it. What a special person he was to family and friends and he will surely be missed.
