Nicholas S. O'Brien
STANLEY -- Lance Cpl. O'Brien, 21, died June 9, 2011 while conducting combat operations in Helmand province, Afghanistan.
Lance Cpl. O'Brien was assigned to the 1st Battalion, 5th Marine Regiment, 1st Marine Division, 1st Marine Expeditionary Force, Camp Pendleton, CA.
Nic was born May 23, 1990 in Charlotte, and was a graduate of East Gaston High School.
His family includes his parents; Richard O'Brien, Jr. and Tammy O'Brien, his sister; Haley O'Brien, grandparents; Johnny Bright and Barbara Bowen, and great-grandmother; Lila Harrison, as well as uncles; Jeff Bright and family, Sean O'Brien and family, and aunt; Bonnie Knight and family, and extended family in Charlotte, and Appomattox, VA, and his longtime girlfriend; Hayley Black and her family.
Services with full military honors will be held at 2:00 PM Monday, June 20th at First Assembly of God, 777 S. Myrtle School Road in Gastonia. Further honors and interment will follow in Arlington National Cemetery at 9:00 AM on Tuesday, June 28th. Following the service in Gastonia, the family will receive friends at Shady Brook Baptist Church in Charlotte.
In lieu of flowers, the O'Brien family respectfully requests memorials be sent to the Josh Cawthorn Fund, in care of Shady Brook Baptist Church, 2940 Belmeade Drive, Charlotte, NC 28214.
Josh was Nic's friend who was seriously injured in the incident which took Nic's life.
Arrangements are in the care of Forest Lawn West Funeral & Cremation Service, Charlotte, NC, 704.395.0055.

Those not directly involved in the life of a Soldier can not comprhend the sacrifices they and their familys make. Although I never knew Nicholas, he was a fellow soldier. He was brave to volunteer during a time of war and accepted his responsibilities with honor. I will pray for your family during this time, but know that his death was not in vain and he died doing what he wanted to do and that was serve his country as a Marine.

Hello, my name is Colleen, and I work for a military contractor in Ohio. One of the things my department does in order to help us stay focused on the warfighter and the mission at hand is honor one of the sodlers, sailors, airmen, or Marines who have been killed during the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. Today is my day to honor one of the heros who has given his life in the name of safetly, patriotism and freedom - I have chosen to honor Lance Cpl Nicholas Obrien today. His name, rank, and hometown will be written on a plaque and hung on our Fallen Heroes Wall where he will be continually honored. I've mourned your son every single day since I heard. I stood on the church lawn to honor him and pray for you all. He reminds me SO much of my own 13 y/o son who is hellbent on joining the USAF. Because of Nic and your family's sacrifice I cherish every second I have with him just as I'm sure you're cherishing 21 years of glorious memories that can never be taken away. To honor Nic, my son and I are adopting deployed servicemen overseas through herobox.org and sending monthly care packages. Nic's made me want to be a better person, for my life to mean just a fraction of what his did. Both my kids go to the gym across the street from Assembly of God and I run their parking lot during their practices. Every time I do that now I stop at that beautiful fountain and say a prayer for Nic and your family. God bless you all and your guardian angel Marine.

Saturday, June 11th as we were sitting with someone I love very dearly in the NSO at the airport to see him off for his first deployment, he also going to Afghanistan, we learned of this soldier's death. That was kind of hard for us as we were sending our loved one off. I can't imagine the hurt this family is suffering with. I will pray for the family and the friends of this young man, who was truly a hero. I never really thought about those serving our country until about 4 years ago when I met someone in the service. I have learned so much and have such an appreciation for everyone who has served or who is serving in our military. Thank you to this young man for giving his life so we can experience freedom.

I was able to pay tribute to Nic as the funeral procession traveled down 74 through Belmont today. I am absolutely heartbroken for his family and friends and cannot begin to imagine the grief you must be feeling. Nic truly is a hero, and I hope that you can at least find some comfort in knowing that he is loved, appreciated and respected by so many people who have never even met him.
