Philip Loftin Obituary

Philip Lynn Loftin, 77, of Mooresville, passed away on Tuesday, April 12, 2016 at Genesis Eldercare in Mooresville.

He was born on July 7, 1938 in Troutman, NC, to the late Foy Tate Loftin and Katherine Heathcox Loftin. Mr. Loftin was a manager of Air Traffic Control for 31 years. He retired from Charlotte Air Traffic Control Tower, and due to his excellent management skills Charlotte won the National Tower of the Year Award for the United States in 1991. Phil won the Kitty Hawk Award in recognition of dedication and commitment to the Federal Aviation Administration, and the Wright Brothers Master Pilot Award in recognition of his contributions to 50 years of safe flying. He was president of the EAA Antique Classic Chapter of NC, SC, and VA from 1990-1992 and then president of Quiet Birdmen Charlotte Hanger from 1992-1994. Phil was a member of First Presbyterian Church in Mooresville. He was a loving and dedicated husband, father, grandfather, and great grandfather.

Mr. Loftin is survived by his wife of 55 years, Martha Hunter Loftin; children, William "Bill" Loftin and wife, Lora, Dr. Lynne McDuffie and husband, Dr. William McDuffie, Susan Squires and husband, Dave; sister, Audrey Montgomery; grandsons, Patrick Loftin, Sgt. Adam Loftin USMC (Ariana), Luke Loftin, River McDuffie; and great grandsons, Colton and Carson.

The family will receive family and friends at 12:00 Noon on Saturday, April 16 at their home in Mooresville. There will be a fly over after the service.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Foothills Outdoors, attn: Dr. William McDuffie, PO Box 423, Robbins, NC 27325 or the charity of your choice.

Mr. Loftin hired me at CLT ATCT, and I remember him as a wonderful Tower manager. One fond memory I have was of him indulging in a Snickers bar after lunch each day! I am so sorry to hear of the passing of Phil. May God bless your family at this time of loss.
