Phillip Davis Obituary

Bishop Phillip Davis, founder and senior pastor of Nations Ford Community Church in Charlotte, was found dead inside his Union County home, apparently the victim of an accidental gunshot wound, the Union County sheriff's office said.

At Nation's Ford, a Southern Baptist congregation that is predominantly African-American, Davis, 62, worked alongside his wife of more than 40 years, Cynthia Davis, a pastor who serves as community services officer. The couple have three children and three grandchildren.

"At this time, it is an accidental shooting," church spokeswoman Jacinda Garabito said Sunday. "That's what we've been told." She said she had no other information.

Worshippers at the church's 8 a.m. service Sunday were greeted by an usher holding out a box of Kleenex. In the sanctuary, photos of Davis flashed on big screens as members hugged and wept.

"Today is a very sad day for us here at Nations Ford Community Church," Garabito told reporters. "It's a shock to us. This morning was supposed to be a huge day of celebration for us."

Sunday was to have been the culmination of the church's Founders' Week, celebrating Davis' establishment of the Southern Baptist congregation 36 years ago. Last week the church paid tribute to Cynthia Davis, as well marking the couple's 42nd wedding anniversary and Davis' birthday.

The Davis family did not attend the 8 a.m. service, Garabido said. They remain at the Davis home in Union County, she said. The church's elders visited there after the shooting to console the family, Garabido said.

The bishop's widow, Garabido said, is "holding up as well as she possibly can. We're praying for her and their three (grown) children."

The church plans a public vigil for Davis at 7 p.m. Monday at the church's main campus, 5910 Nations Ford Road.

The church usually broadcasts its services live, but said it was not doing so Sunday.

The Davises' son, R.J., is pastor at the church's Ballantyne campus.

This Sunday's services are to be cut short, with no preaching. Instead, the congregation will be invited to grieve and pray.

"The focus today is, Bishop Davis' legacy lives on," Garabido said. "Today it's OK to grieve. This is something that is hard for all of us."

Reporters were asked not to go into the sanctuary or to interview members.

"Bishop Davis is an amazing leader here," Garabido said. "He's really like a father figure to us all....If you needed him, he was a phone call away."

In recent weeks, Davis headed up several community conversations connected to the trial of Randall "Wes" Kerrick.

In 2012, Davis had preached in favor of passage of the constitutional amendment banning gay marriage, which North Carolina voters approved by a landslide. And he had expressed disappointment in 2013 after two Supreme Court decisions struck decisive blows for same-sex rights. "I will continue praying for our nation," he said after those decisions.

Davis received his bachelor of science in business from Xavier University in Cincinnati, and master's of ministry and his doctor of divinity degrees from the Carolina School of Theology. He was the author of two books, "The Vision Casting Congregation" and "The Father Force."

Bishop Davis:
I was thinking about you an went in to read your obituary and just wish you was here for the holidays! I plan to go to the New Years Eve service next week and I know it will be strange not hearing you present your sermon for the new year! I've gone to the NYE program every year since 2005. But, I know you will be there in Spirit and that gives me the strength to want to be there to hopefully hear RJ's message! Merry Christmas to you Bishop and you are so Greatly missed in this world and hearing you speak knowledge and common sense to your people! May you soar with Angels in Heaven cause I know GOD is using you still in Spirit! We All Love @ Miss YOU!

Shocked to read about the demise of my beloved pastor this morning. May your gentle soul continue to rest in perfect peace. I had the honour of meeting Dr Davis in 1998 as a congregant at Nations Ford Baptist Church as it was known then. What a fine gentleman with a smile. Signore sia con te. Addio!

Had the privilege of helping Pastor Davis as an intern during the Spring 1986 and Spring 1987 semesters while a student at UNC-Charlotte. After graduating, I went into the Air Force, and moved back to Charlotte. Pastor Davis had recently started at Galilean Baptist Church and I helped him with the food pantry, cleaning and vacuuming the church sanctuary, helped him some around his house, and other things he needed help with. A very godly man and I have fond memories of working with him. Remember I was helping in his Galilean church office when the Challenger Space Shuttle exploded and we were both shocked at what happened. Will continue to pray that the Holy Spirit will continue to comfort and direct the Davis family as only He can!

Rev.Cynthia and RJ, I remember when Bishop Phillip performed his first sermon at Alpha Baptist Church in Bolingbrook, Il; "Under New Management." That sermon has stayed with me since. I knew then that this was an anointing from God. I remembered how you opened your home to me when I moved back to Charlotte for a brief time and attended your church which was small at the time. God has brought you a mighty long way and he is still with you and in control.
I will continue to pray for God's grace, mercy, peace and compassion upon you and your family during this time.

Dr. Davis pushed me as a student to reach down inside and push myself to be a kingdom driven minister. He help me to understand the call on my life and how to properly and spiritual flow in it to best serve the kingdom. I don't believe I would be the effective minister I am today if not for his push and dedication to educate and equip the kingdom with ministerial development. My prayers are with the Davis family and the Nations Ford Church family.

In loving memory of a wonderful person. An awesome man of God. Thank-you Bishop Davis for all that you have taught me. I have visited many churches in this city, but when I stepped foot in Nations Ford Community Church back in 2011, I knew this is where I needed to be to move forward with my spritual walk with Jesus. Your way of teaching so that we understand the ways of the Gospel was outstanding. Your love for not only your church family but the love you had for the city and others across the world, have really made me look at myself and wonder if Im doing all that I should and could be doing to make this workd a better place. You have helped me become a better person. Now I can go out and spead the gospel while serving my community with open arms. Whether it be time, food or money. I will do something so that part of your legacy lives on. We love you and will miss you always Bishop Davis.

Bishop Davis was the first person I had ever heard "Teach the Word" in everyday language and apply it to everyday life. That would have been 1994 -- I attended the Wednesday night sessions in the gym, and heard his amazing teaching on the origin and history of Halloween -- it was eye opening and a game changer for me.

At one point in my career I hosted a morning Christian radio program that served the Charlotte/Gastonia market -- and as Resurrection Sunday approached, I asked Bishop Davis to call in to the show and talk about the crucifixion and what The Lord Jesus Christ endured in order to redeem us. The interview ran long (haha) over an hour (it was supposed to be 5 minutes) -- I made an "executive decision" to preempt other paid programming and took some major heat -- but wow, it was worth it -- that live on-air teaching totally changed my perception of manliness of Jesus -- He was tough as nails and an amazing Warrior King. Later, I was honored to personally go to Bishop's study and record his weekly radio broadcast -- we recorded five programs at 7 minutes each -- the amount of meaty, nutritious, relevant content he could deliver in that amount of time absolutely blew me away - he had a way of making the complicated things of the Gospel understandable and applicable. This man changed my life for the better -- a true Alpha Male at the top of his game -- serving God, his biological family, his church family, spiritual family and anyone else who came within an earshot of a radio, TV, the internet - where ever his voice could be heard -- amazing. A truly exceptional individual.

...so to Mrs. Davis and the entire Nations Ford church family, who have always made me feel like family -- I express my deepest, most heartfelt condolences. My only regret is that I did not share this with Bishop on this side, nevertheless, I will just have to seek him out in Glory.

Bishop Davis you will be missed. God's light shined bright in you just as the S.T.A.R. you always encouraged us to be. By God's grace your ministry and your fatherly advice not only saved my life but gave it direction and hope. You taught us how to find our life's purpose and chase after those things from on high. God has called one of His "very best" home. All of us at NFCC will miss you and we love you.

As I sit here thinking trying to convince myself this isn't true and that my beloved pastor is somewhere doing what he loved most - studying the word of God. As I prepare mentally to go to honor his legacy - I can't help but remember how he taught in authority. I think about that little laugh he does when teaching. I had searched hard to find someone who could rightly divide the word of truth and preach the Bible for what it says and didn't worry about being politically correct. - I found such a pastor, leader and teacher in Bishop Davis. He was humble, apt to teach and just down right personable. My condolences to Pastor Cynthia and the entire Davis family.

About 4 years ago, I went with our youth from church on a mission trip to Charlotte, NC. We removed an old roof from a house and put on a new roof for someone in need. The group to which I was assigned was sponsored while there by Nations Ford Community Church. Pastor Davis and his wife were awesome as well as the choir, the congregation, and the entire church. Last year and this year when Phil and I went to Santee, SC for our annual golf trip, we stopped in Charlotte overnight just to attend the Sunday service at National Ford Church before going on to Santee. The church service with Dr. Davis and his congregation had become the highlight of our vacation south. Thank you Nations Ford Church and the Lord for sharing Dr. Davis with us. True shepherd loves God, family, and others....
True shepherd leads Gods people with love.....
True shepherd is loyal to God's people.....
True shepherd is a leader and leads others to Christ....
My family was sent to serve under his leadership and I learned quickly Bishop Davis was a true shepherd. May others rise up and follow his legacy. You'll be missed!

As I reflect over the many years that I have been a member of the NFCC family, I can't help but give a little smile and a great big sigh. My heart has been heavy and I truly feel as if I have been kicked in my soul. Pastor Cynthia and family, we are and will continue to pray that God comfort you and give you strength today and in the days to come. I can't imagine what it will be like not seeing Bishop on campus any more. He was an excellent teacher and a true man of God. He has taught us a great deal and he has blessed my family during a difficult time. We will miss him greatly. We are grieving with you and we will continue to go forward with you. God Bless you all and as Bishop would say we love you and there is nothing you can do about it.
