Robert Dunn Obituary

Robert R. Dunn CORNELIUS - Robert Randolph Dunn, of Cornelius, died Sunday, March 9, 2041, at his residence. Bob was born on Dec. 15, 1946, in Akron, Ohio to Albert Wilkerson Dunn and Jane Ballard Dunn who predeceased him. Bob spent his adolescent years in Manila, Philippines, where his father was the President of the Goodyear Tire and Rubber Company. He attended and graduated from the American School in Manila and was the lead vocalist and guitarist for The Kingsmen, a rock and roll band he founded. In addition to the band, Bob found success in sailing. Before the age of 17, he purchased his own sailboat and became an avid sailor joining the Manila Yacht Club, racing competitively. Bob returned to the United States to attend Methodist University in Fayetteville where he received a degree in Business Administration with a concentration in Economics in 1969. He was a loyal alumnus and was involved in the school's Center for Entrepreneurship, as well as the Board of Paralegal Studies. Recently, he founded the Dr. Sid Gautam Scholarship for Entrepreneurs and also has a scholarship, through the paralegal studies program, founded in his name. He was given the Distinguished Alumnus Award by the school in 2013. Bob was proud that both his daughters graduated from Methodist University as well and will continue to maintain his legacy. Bob began his career in lending with American Leasing, which later became a part of Barclays Bank in Charlotte. He subsequently joined National Bank of North Carolina (NCNB), which later became Nations Bank and ultimately Bank of America. While at the bank, Bob was recognized by Hugh McColl as someone with a talent for resolving troubled credits and spent most of his tenure with the bank working in the special situations group. During this time period, Bob met Tim Finley and together they founded The Finley Group in 1985; a firm dedicated to providing expert counsel to companies experiencing financial difficulty. The Finley Group was one of the first firms in the country dedicated exclusively to this area of practice. In nearly three decades, The Finley Group has helped hundreds of companies overcome great challenges and improve their condition. In May, 2013 he was appointed by Governor Pat McCrory to the North Carolina Capital Facilities Finance Agency Board of Directors. Despite the demands of building a professional services firm, Bob was always a dedicated and loving father to his daughters, Dianne and Leslie. In 2004 he married the love of his life, Ann Stirewalt Dunn whom he had been friends with for over 20 years. Later in life Bob found extreme joy in being a loving grandfather. He spent many weekends playing in the park and making brownies with his granddaughter, Emory or putting together complicated Lego sets with grandsons, Harrison and Davis. He found happiness in those whom he held close as friends and family. Bob is survived by his wife, Ann Stirewalt Dunn of Cornelius, his daughters; Leslie Dunn (Dave Lipscomb) of Cornelius and Dianne Dunn Jones (Andra Jones) of Charlotte; his bonus-daughter Amy Huggins (Lauri-Ann Barkley), of Concord; and his brother-in-law; Edward Stirewalt also of Concord, as well as, three grandchildren; Harrison, Davis and Emory. He is also survived by his father's wife; Theresa Dunn of Hilton Head, S.C. A Celebration of his Life will be held Wednesday evening, March 12, at the Van Landingham Estate, 2010 The Plaza, Charlotte, NC 28205 from 6:00 - 8:00 PM. A funeral service will be held at Myers Park United Methodist Church, 1501 Queens Road, Charlotte, NC 28207, at 2:30 PM on Thursday, March 13. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be sent to the Dr. Sid Gautam Scholarship for Entrepreneurs, a scholarship which he established at his Alma Mater, Methodist University, Advancement Office, 5400 Ramsey Street, Fayetteville, NC 28311 or the Albert Wilkerson Dunn and Maude Wilkerson Dunn Scholarship Fund, which his father established in his grandmother's honor, at Duke University, Office of Alumni and Development Records, Duke University, Box 90581, Durham, NC 27708-0581. My memories of Bob go back to 8th grade at the American School in Manila - and then my 16th birthday party and a bottle of Chanel #5. I never saw him after high school and wish I'd known he was in North Carolina. I remember him as a wonderful person and was so happy to learn that he found such happiness in his life. I just found out about his passing - may I offer my belated but sincere sympathies to his wife and family. I still have a couple of the Kingsmen 45's and will play them in his memory.

Bob was a friend when our families were in the Philippines and we both were going to The American School there. I remember Bob as one of the good guy's and a really good musician! I was in The Shanfields and Bob was in the Kingsmen and we both shared a love of music. I am saddened by his passing and offer prayers and heart felt condolences for his family. He was a great guy and I will always remember him with fondness.

May God's blessing be on you all.

First may I give a sincere apology for not being at the funeral. I regret the death of my brother-in-law. Bob was a generous man who was savy and knew good from bad. To Dianne, Leslie and to Ann, Camellia, Steve and to Cristy, may you all have comfort in being part of this great man's life.

I will always remember my first love, Bob, of our days in the Philippines & here in the States. A truly kind man. I know you are at rest but have left way too early. My deepest sincere condolence to your wife Ann (who filled your life with happiness these last few years) & your children, your brother Steve and sister Cristy. You were a true organizer and I hope that you organize a rock band in heaven to greet us all your old friends & family when we get there. Love Irene Davis Lambert

My condolences to Bob's family. Bob was my next door neighbor while we were in high school in the Philippines. We were both from Akron; his dad working for Goodyear and my dad working for Goodrich. I never saw Bob after graduating but it was nice to read that he was a happy and successful family man and businessman.

Bob as we knew him in the Philippines will be well remembered as the lead singer in the Kingsmen. I did not have the pleasure of seeing him after high school but I know that he was able to reconnect with some of his friends from that day. Love and Light to Bob and all of his family. He brought wonderful music to my ears.

I fondly remember my Finley Group days and all of the good times we had amongst ourselves and with our colleagues. Bob always had a great story to tell during the Tower Club hour or during our late Friday afternoon office "meetings." Lots of laughter for sure.

To all of those who are left to mourn, may you all find comfort during this difficult time. May God send you his peace. May you remember that he is with you all every step of this painful journey as you see only one footprint in the sand.

Much love to all,

Kelly Finley Comerford

RIP, Bob. I remember you well from our days in the Philippines. I enjoyed the band shows your "combo", the Kingsmen, and mine played. I regret that we hadn't gotten together more recently. RIP, old friend.
My condolences to Ann, your children, and your siblings.
