Robert Lackey Obituary

Robert Lackey
March 28, 1925 - November 30, 2021
Chapel Hill, North Carolina - Robert Stevenson Lackey was born in Raleigh on March 25, 1925, son of the late Rev. Boston McGee Lackey and Janet Matthews Lackey. Raised in Lenoir NC, Bob attended the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and UNC School of Medicine, finishing his clinical training and earning his medical degree at Jefferson Medical College in Philadelphia, PA, in 1948. Following an internship at Charlotte Memorial Hospital, he completed his specialty training in radiology at the Mallinckrodt Institute of Radiology at Barnes Hospital, St. Louis, MO. He served as Captain in the USAF(MC) during the Korean conflict.
He married Julia Winchell in 1949, and in 1955 they returned to Charlotte with their growing family where Dr. Lackey embarked on a distinguished 35 year medical career as Chief of Radiology at Charlotte Memorial Hospital, later Carolinas HealthCare System, now Atrium Health. He was founding president of the Charlotte Radiological Group which has pioneered decades of innovation in the field of radiology, introducing and advancing vital technologies in diagnostic imaging and oncological services throughout the region.
Dr. Lackey belonged to a number of regional and national medical societies, including the Piedmont Radiology Society, the Mecklenburg County Medical Society, and the North Carolina Chapter of the American College of Radiology, serving in a variety of supporting and leadership roles. His achievements have been recognized by many organizations, with honors and awards including a silver medal for professional contributions to the NC Chapter of the American College of Radiology, a Fellowship in the American College of Radiology, and appointment to the Board of Chancellors for that group. He also maintained an active involvement in community affairs and served on the boards of several nonprofit organizations. After retirement in 1990 he assisted the outreach programs of Christ Episcopal Church in Charlotte, and served on the board of Planned Parenthood. In 2017 he was awarded the Order of the Long Leaf Pine by Governor Roy Cooper.
Bob and Julia Lackey enjoyed an active retirement, traveling and spending time at Pawleys Island. At home in Charlotte, Bob could often be found out on the golf course. In 2005 the couple moved from Charlotte to the Chapel Hill area, home to the majority of their family, who were delighted and grateful to have them so close.
Bob is survived by his devoted wife of 72 years, Julia, and children Robin Jacobs (Barry), Susan Lackey, Steve Lackey (Liska), and Bill Lackey (Yvonne), as well as his grandchildren and great grandchildren, all of whom will hold his memory forever bright in their hearts and minds.
Remembrances may be made to a charity of your choice. A service will be held in Charlotte at a later date.

Bob was an astute radiologist, a great teacher and mentor and a man with a sharp wit and wonderful sense of humor. His passing is a great loss. My condolences and sympathy go out to Julia and her family.

Bob was my friend, my mentor and my gold standard for leadership qualities. I got to know him best through our reading group which met at 6AM at CMC. Our retreat at Winken, Blinken and Nod on Pawley's Island (see picture attached) will always be remembered for the shared fellowship and camaraderie.
My sincere condolences to Julia and the Lackey family
