Ruth Williams McCaskill was called home at the age of 91 on October 21, 2025. The common denominator of her life and the legacy she has left is her great love. Ruth loved deeply, unconditionally, and sincerely. She loved her Lord, her family, her friends, and serving others. She was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, and friend. She will be greatly missed as her love touched so many.
Born October 29, 1933, in Rock Hill, SC, she was the only child of the late George W. and Ruth McQuiston Williams.
During Ruth's undergraduate years at Queens College, she was a member of Alpha Gamma Delta Sorority and president of her chapter. She obtained a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration in 1956. After college, she received her teaching certificate from Lenoir Rhyne University. She taught elementary school (third and fifth grade) at the Old Rock School in Valdese, NC where she was raised, and Cotswold Elementary School in Charlotte, NC.
She met her future husband on a blind date. John Malcolm McCaskill and Ruth were married in 1964 and enjoyed 56 years of marriage before John passed in 2020.
After her move to Matthews Glen, Ruth and her longtime closest friend, Scottie Banks, recognized a need within their new community. They led the effort to open Goods to Go, a resale shop in Matthews Glen with a community-wide benefit. All proceeds from Goods to Go sales support the Samaritan's Fund which helps residents remain at Matthews Glen when their funds are depleted. The store gave Ruth much joy and purpose in her later years as she used her gifts of creativity and hospitality to serve others and her Lord.
Ruth's faith in Christ was central in her life. She knew Jesus Christ as her Lord and Savior. She loved to read her bible and pray. She was an active member at Sardis Presbyterian Church for over 50 years.
Ruth is survived by her loving daughters, Jennifer McCaskill Billiard (Jody) of Matthews and Leslie McCaskill Ramos (Rich) of Greensboro, NC, and adoring grandchildren Hannah Billiard of Jackson, MS, Sarah Billiard Blakely (Drew) of Wilmington, David Billiard (fiancé Kara Schmit) of Charlotte, Ben Billiard (MaKayla) of Lynchburg, VA, Noah and John Ramos of Lexington, VA, and Mario Montes of Honduras.
Her celebration of life will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, November 1, at Matthews Glen. A separate, private family burial will be held at Sardis Presbyterian Church.
Ruth requested in lieu of flowers, memorial gifts be made to the following organizations: (1) Matthews Glen-Goods to Go Thrift Store which benefits the MG Samaritan Fund.
