Samuel Stevenson Obituary

Samuel Clark Stevenson
Mr. Stevenson was born January 13, 1956 to Mrs. Sarah Mingo Stevenson and the late Mr. Robert Louis Stevenson, Sr. He attended the Charlotte public schools, and graduated from West Charlotte High School in 1974, where he was a member of the choir. From 1975-1977, Mr. Stevenson attended Alabama Lutheran Academy and College (presently Concordia college) in Selma, Alabama.
'Sammy,' as he was loving addressed, landed his first onstage speaking role in 1972, in a Central Piedmont Community College Summer Theater production of 'The Me Nobody Knows.' Mrs. Sarah Coleman, a family friend, introduced Mr. Stevenson to renowned Charlotte voice coach Frances Shafter, who was instrumental in his singing with the Charlotte Oratorio Singers, Opera Carolina, the Charlotte Philharmonic, Charlotte Symphony, and the Charlottetown Players. Mrs. Shafter was so impressed with 'Sammy's' rich bass-baritone voice that she took him to Manhattan School of Music and the University of Cincinnati for auditions. 'Sammy' was offered full scholarships by both schools; he chose Cincinnati, where he remained for two years. He entered Manhattan School of Music, where he studied one and a half years. The passing of his father brought him back to Charlotte, where he worked with Opera Carolina and other companies. During this time, Mr. Stevenson also worked with Mrs. Vivian Williams to form the Double Oaks Boys Choir and became her assistant in this role. In 1985, 'Sammy' was first place winner of the local, district, and national Leontyne Price Vocal Arts Competition sponsored by the Charlotte Club of the National Association of Negro Business and Professional Women's Clubs, Inc.
Mr. Stevenson made his debut in Charlotte Opera's 1981 production of 'Porgy and Bess' in which he played the role of Jake, the undertaker. He also performed in 'The Wiz', 'Purlie', and 'God's Trombone'. 'Sammy' was then introduced by a friend and opera star, Dr. Elizabeth Peeler Graham, to Klein's Living Arts Agency of New York, where his tenure began, and he was elevated to the lead role of Porgy. He traveled all over the world with the Klein agency. As a member of the Grace Bumbry African-American Heritage Ensemble, 'Sammy' performed in the world famous Salzberg Festival, as well as other opera houses in Austria, Germany, and Carnegie Hall in New York. He also appeared with the Miami Opera, the Jacksonville Lyric Opera, and the Gainesville, Florida Opera. 'Sammy' shared his gift of music as a private voice teacher to several students in the Charlotte community.
In 2004, Mr. Stevenson became a soloist and voice instructor for the Church in the Round Singers at Myers Park United Methodist Church and specialist to Dr. Thomas Moore, Staff Associate. He remained in this position until his death.
Mr. Stevenson is survived by his mother, Sarah Mingo Stevenson, former Charlotte-Mecklenburg School Board member and a long-time community activist; his son, Marcus LaTroy Bridges; one brother, Thomas Elbert Stevenson; two uncles, Wylie Mingo, Jr. and Edward L. Mingo; seven aunts, Rachel M. Addison (James), Ella Louise Burch (Charlie), Elloree M. Erwin, Izetta Barnes, Roberta M. Harris, Mildred Mingo-Kirkland (Grover C.), Queen E. Johnson and a host of other relatives and friends.
A celebration of Sammy's life will be Monday, January 23, 2006 at 6 PM - 8 PM at Prince of Peace Lutheran Church, 3001 Beatties Ford Road. Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, January 24, at 2 PM at Myers Park United Methodist Church, 1501 Queens Road, at Providence Road. Interment will follow at York Road Memorial Gardens.

Dear Mrs. Stevenson, when I recieved the new of Sammy's passing I was so very sad. Sammy and I were in the Wiz together at Central Piedmont Community College Summer Theater where he played Scarcrow and I was part of the cast playing a munchkin and every thing else that was part of the production. Sammy was caring and funny. I thank God Sammy enriched my life for the short time he was in it. I remember Sammys' laugh; How I loved to hear it! Earth has no sorrow that heaven can not heal.

My deepest sympathy to the family. Sammy was a close and dear friend to my mother and our family. They worked together many years and developed a great relationship. It saddens me deeply to know that they are now both gone from this earth(as she passed in August of 2004), however I am comforted knowing that they are no longer suffering here on earth . They will both be greatly missed.

To the Stevenson Family:

My deepest sympathy and sincere thanks for his rich life. Sammy and I played together in the neighborhood, attended school at West Charlotte and loved music. He was also quite a pool player. I will miss Sammy for the great smile and enthusiam for life.

May God Bless and keep Him..

I remember Sammy from The Ebony Group and Company. I recall his beautiful baritone voice,I was the youngest of the vocal component of Ebony Group, While rehearsing and performing with Sammy I gained a great appreciation for his vocal instrument and the opera. God needed his voice in his choir. To Mrs. Stevenson "Be not dismayed, whatever, God will take care of you" Although it has been some years since I had contact with Sammie, I will miss the his Golden Voice.

Sammy will be missed by so many people. He sang at my wedding and we will always cherish the video of his singing the "Lord's Prayer". He was such a genuine and nice person. Our prayers are with his family and friends.

My husband Fred and I meet Sammy two years ago through Thomas Moore in a small choir group called Joyful Voices at Myers Park. My first name is Sandra but I go by Sam and Sammy thought that was just a wonderful way to be connected. From the start he made us feel like family. Not just his singing but by his personality and warmth as a person of God he connected with our hearts. He will be missed but not forgotten. He will always be one of God's high angels to us. May God's blessings, peace and love be with you Sarah and the rest of the Stevenson family.

To Mrs. Stevenson and Family;

I just want to express my deepest sympathy to you during the loss of such a wonderful person. I will always remeber Sammy as a trailblazer in the Performing Arts Community of Charlotte and the SouthEast. He did not mind sharing his God given talent with others and that was indeed a blessing just to witness his gift. May God show HIS grace upon you and my prayers are with you.

Mrs. Stevenson & Family,

I am saddened to learn of my friend's passing. However, I rejoice that God has called him to his eternal home.

Sammy and I have been friends forever! From Elem., through High School and afterwards. Although we haven't talked frequently in the past few years, I would always try to call him on his birthday, or when I could catch him in town!

Sammy was funny, crazy and full of drama! His voice was truly a gift, and he used it for God's glory. It's ironic that he sang "You and I" and the "Lord's Prayer" at my wedding also...I will always have wonderful memories of that day.

I just want you to know that my prayers are with you and your family. I know this is a difficult time for you but trust in God, and He will see you through...May the memories of your beloved son always bring you joy and peace!

Aunt Sarah, Thomas, Helen, and all of the Stevenson family, may God be with each of you as we prepare to say good-bye to Sammy. He is singing in God's Heavenly Choir with the angels, and that beautiful voice will be with us always.

It's been a minute since I last saw Sammy, but I have many dear memories to hold close. The memories of our families visiting each other, playing hide and seek, and tag when it was time to go home. Sammy and his brothers were my brothers, and were always special to me. I can still hear him singing "You and I" and "The Lord's Prayer" at my wedding, and how beautiful he sang. Those are the memories that I will hold dear to me always.

Aunt Sarah, your baby boy is fine, and will never hurt again. You loved him dearly, but God loved him best. Sammy did you right proud, and we are all proud of him. And to you Sammy, keep on singing, just keep on singing, and I will see you again.

Our deepest sympathies from the Helena Cunningham family to the Stevenson family. I first met Sammy at piano lessons 39 years ago and had the opportunity to see him perform in Charlotte in the 70s. Our family always admired Sammy. God bless the Stevenson family.

Sammy you left us too soon and you will be missed dearly by the Prince of Peace Family. I will never forget the song you sang, There is a Balm Gilead. Your light shined brightly while you were on this earth. You will always be a legend in my world. God's Speed to you Sammy!!!!!

Nephew Sammy, gone but will never, never be forgotten. Sammy you left us all too soon, there is a void in our hearts, we shared so many laughs, tears, good times, a few not so good time, but through it all we made it. Now the time has come that we will have to say goodby, but just for a little while, you see we are all in the race, you ran faster than the rest of us. One day, we shall meet again, in that great by and by, Jesus will come on a cloud and you will be with him. Sleep on Sammy, now you are singing on the Heavely Choir. We loved you, but no one loves like GOD. I can imagine you singing this song "If you call me in the morning, and I don't answer my phone, it would be that I am getting ready, or it could be I am already gone, you see I just stopped by OWN MY WAY HOME.

Sammy radiated warmth and with his booming voice broght people closer to God. He was my teacher, but also my dear friend. The real tragedy for my life would have been if I had never known Sammy. I am on his balcony, and he is on mine.
