Spurgeon Webber Obituary

Family, friends, co-workers and patients are celebrating the life and mourning the loss this week of local dentist Spurgeon Webber Jr.

The 77-year-old, one of the city's leading philanthropists, died Tuesday. He donated to several causes and won numerous awards, including induction into the Order of the Long Leaf Pine, the highest award given by the state of North Carolina.

"He was my hero," said Spurgeon Webber III, who followed his dad's footsteps in becoming a dentist. "He was my father, my daddy, my friend. I miss him already."

The Urban League of Central Carolinas received more than $20,000 in donations from Webber for workforce and education programs. Webber also encouraged others to donate as well, said Urban League President Patrick Graham.

"He actually saw his own self interest beyond his own toes. He realized that the interest of other people and them actually growing was also his own interest," Graham said.

The Urban League honored Webber with an Outstanding Community Champion award in 2010.

His example resonated with students trying to make better lives for themselves. "They could see that through effort, your legacy can actually live far beyond you and I think that's the most important thing he gave to students," Graham said.

Webber also served as vice chairman of the board of trustees for Central Piedmont Community College, where he and his wife established scholarships to help minority students. A dental laboratory at the school is named in his honor.

He and his wife also gave endowments or unrestricted gifts to Hampton, Johnson C. Smith, and Winston-Salem State universities, along with Meharry Medical College

In 2004, he was among those honored by the Thurgood Marshall Scholarship Fund for professional and civic excellence.

"I feel like we've all suffered a profound loss, for our community and our family," said his daughter-in-law, Sterlin Benson Webber. "He supported so many people with his love and his generosity. We just feel blessed to have had him as a part of our lives."

Webber earned a bachelor of science degree in chemistry from Hampton Institute in Virginia and a doctor of dental surgery degree from Meharry Medical College in Tennessee.

"What a loss" is what Eleanor Willis said while walking out of Webber's Keller Avenue dental office Wednesday afternoon in west Charlotte.

"He was the most wonderful dentist anyone would want to meet," Willis said. Webber always put patients first, she said, and hated to see them hurting and helped them even if they couldn't pay.

Spurgeon Webber III said his father's example will inspire him in the years ahead.

"I'm going to try to honor his legacy by trying to be a good father, a good husband and a good friend."

Webber's funeral is Saturday at the Johnson C. Smith University Chapel. Visitation starts at 10 a.m. and the funeral starts at 11 a.m.

I honor the memory of a man who opened doors of opportunity for others he did not even know. A gentle giant...who encourages us by the way he led his life. The example he sets by the way he treats family and friend alike is commendable. His family has made our family feel at home when we relocated to North Carolina and did not know anyone. God has called one of his own to come home because he has completed his task.

To the Webber Family

We offer our words of condolence, as well as admiration for a great fallen hero to many! The Webber Family has given us many opportunities to be in the company of Dr. Webber and wife Jean. As a musician, I feel honored to have been chosen to provide music for Dr. & Mrs. Webber's 50th wedding anniversary party, hosted at the wonderful home of Dr. & Mrs Spurgeon Webber 111. Through this wonderful and gracious family I have had the opportunity to entertain at many occasions in their home, including for their dear friend Dr. Maya Angelou. As recently as November 12 of this year I had the honor to again entertain in the Webber home. This time it was for the American Heart Association. I enjoyed great conversations with senior Dr. Webber and wife Jean during and after the event. Several days after that event, I had a long conversation with Sterlin's mother, (Mrs. Benson). She spoke so admirably of senior Dr. Webber and wife Jean. Dr. Webber leaves a remarkable legacy for all to follow. He represents the epitome of humanitarianism.
