Thomas Whitener Obituary

COLUMBIA -- Mr. Thomas Manly Whitener, III, 40, died Monday, February 11, 2002. Services will be held at 3 p.m. Wednesday at Trinity Episcopal Church Cathedral. A private family burial will be held in Elmwood Memorial Gardens. The family will be at 110 Edisto Avenue.
Mr. Whitener was born in Hickory, NC, the son of Thomas Manly Whitener, Jr. and Ann Byrum Whitener. He was a member of Trinity Episcopal Cathedral and was a Financial Consultant with IJL Wachovia in Columbia, SC. He attended Hickory High School and later graduated from Wofford College in Spartanburg, SC, with a BA in French. Mr. Whitener was actively involved in the Columbia Sertoma Club, where he recently served as Chairman of the Board and past President and was recognized in 2000 with the organization's "Honor Club Award" in recognition of excelling in all areas of club achievement. He was a member of Forest Lake Country Club and the Columbia Ball. Mr. Whitener also served on a variety of committees at Hammond School and Trinity Episcopal Cathedral and was a mentor for the Salvation Army.
Surviving are his wife, Elizabeth Roddey Whitener; sons, Roddey Dubose Whitener and Wilson Stone Whitener, of the home; sister and brother-in-law, Croft Whitener Lane and Hugh C. Lane, Jr. of Charleston, SC; his parents of Hickory, NC; father-in-law, Francis Marion Roddey, Jr. of Columbia; and brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Francis M. "Frank" Roddey, III, and Molly Lawrence Roddey of Columbia.
Memorials may be made to Carolina Children's Home, Trinity Episcopal Cathedral Cornerstone Campaign, or to Kanuga Conference Center, Hendersonville, NC.
