Slaying of football player, star wrestler rattles Harding High
MELISSA MANWARE AND LANGSTON WERTZ JR.
When police officers rushed to Parkway Avenue to investigate gunfire Sunday night, they found a bloody shoe.
So officers and search dogs began scouring the west Charlotte neighborhood for its owner.
Nearly an hour later, they found 18-year-old Travis Davis lying in the woods.
Davis, a junior and standout athlete at Harding University High School, was dead.
Police believe he ran into the woods after he was shot near a city bus stop.
Nobody had been charged in his death late Monday, and police say they have few leads.
Davis had no criminal record.
"He was coming home from getting his hair braided," said Harding assistant football coach Masanori Toguchi, who spoke to Davis' family after his death. "He was headed to a bus stop. Nobody knows what happened after that. He didn't seem to have any beefs with anybody. We just don't know. We're losing a leader and someone who meant a lot to Harding."
Jeff Hager, an assistant principal at Harding, said the principal made an announcement about Davis' death Monday morning. The school canceled all athletic activities Monday and called in extra counselors to meet with grieving students. Several of Davis' friends were picked up early by their parents, he said.
The athletic director will decide later this week whether to cancel Friday night's football game. If the game is played, he said, it will be dedicated to Davis.
Davis started at fullback and linebacker for the Harding Rams. He was also an all-conference wrestler who qualified for the N.C. 4A state championships last year.
"He'd really turned some heads with college coaches in terms of his wrestling ability," Harding Athletic Director Alvin Wideman said. "He was well-liked and pretty popular on campus."
Toguchi has been close to Davis for two years and took him home from practice every day. Wideman said he sent all the coaches home early Monday and will decide about Friday's game once funeral arrangements are made.
Police say they don't have a suspect or know a motive in Davis' killing, which was the 58th homicide investigated by Charlotte-Mecklenburg police this year.

Travis, since your death I think of life in a whole different perspective now, I never really realized how time is soooo precious and could be taken at the snap of a finger...but everytime i think of my homeboy Trav I always remember that he is looking down on me, I love you man, Rest In Peace.

Big Trav, I know everyone else is still crying and weeping over your tragedy, but i know that GOD ALMIGHTY makes no misstakes and has put you in a place that you truly deserved to be. But WHY?? We were just sitting in the weight room that Saturday(Oct.7) laughing about girls and everything else. We had so many memories together that my fingers would fall off if I typed them all. The ones that come to mind:
*When we went to Dairy Queen every thursday after practice
*When you would call the huddle on the field when knowone else would listen to me.
*Everyday in practice when you would tell me that you liked hitting fat offensive lineman like me.LOL
*When me, you, and Kirby would snap together and you thought you were better than me.
Man I love you, but I know that you are standing right next to me laughing as I type these words right now.

It's like who eould ever think it would happen to u out of all people. travis u know we go way back to 7th grade and i remember u was so bad.LOL but through out the years u have changed for the better and not on i have notice that MAN I MISS U SO MUCH IT HURTS TO KNOW UR NEVER COMIN BACK AGAIN. Wussup man dang its hard to believe it sry i'm a lil late jus took a while to come here. its been real dif. lately over there in those lb drills wit u not steppin up and doin everything 1st..ur stuff is still in ur locker, we left it the way u had it last but man travis u taught me a lot bruh from the time i met you. u are truly missed but i know you're in a better place with no pain or anything but i love u man and thanks for everything you taught me and continue to teach me.

Ms Davis i cant say that i knew your child or that i hung out with him at all because i didnt. I didnt even know him, but when i heard the news monday morning i felt something in my heart. Ive read and heard alot of things about Travis and he seemed to be a wonderful young man. I feel like ive known him, thats how i feel inside. The death of Travis really made me realize that God can take your life at any age. It doesnt matter how old. Im 18 yrs old and im getting my life right with God cause i will never know when its my time. I'm not gonna say that i know how it feels to loose a child because i dont know how it feels. But i can tell you dis, God makes things happen for a reason. Maybe it was Travis time to die, Who knows? Only GOD does!!!!! Keep your head up Ms. Davis and remeber you'll see your precious son again he's in heaven probaly doing what he love with God!!!!!!!!!

There are no words anyone can say to make the pain in your heart go away when I lost my 13yr old little girl I could not breath.Think about what Travis did in life and what a blessing he was to your family.
