Walter Grubb Obituary

Walter Lee Grubb Jr., M.D., 83, Passed away on Tuesday, April 17, 2018. He was born in Radford, Virginia, the only child of Walter Lee Grubb Sr. and Dorothy Elizabeth Grubb, and grew up in Roanoke Virginia. He was preceded in death by his wife, Judith Hilton Grubb, his high school sweetheart and beloved wife of 56 years and their daughter, Lynda Kay Grubb. He is survived by his two children, Steven Michael Grubb and Walter Lee Grubb, III, Ph.D., Walter Lee's daughters, Olivia Marie Grubb and Abigale Virginia Grubb and by his devoted companion, Jane Gissendaner, with whom he exchanged Covenant Marriage Vows on March 25, 2017.

He graduated from Jefferson High School and received a B.S. Degree from Hampden-Sydney College in 1957 where he played football and an M.D. from the Medical College of Virginia (MCV) where he also completed his residency in Diagnostic Radiology in 1966. From 1966-1969 he served in the US Army Medial Corps and was stationed at the 45th Army Field Hospital in Vicenza Italy and Dewitt Army Hospital, Ft. Belvoir, Alexandria, Virginia. He was a professor of Radiology at MCV from 1969-1971 and he moved the family to Charlotte, North Carolina to join Charlotte Radiology, PA as a diagnostic radiologist in 1971. He retired from active practice in 1995.

Walt was an active man and was an avid golfer at Carmel Country Club, a recreational scuba diver and a private pilot. He was fascinated with history and with flight and realized a lifelong dream when he was able to pilot a P-51 D Mustang. He enjoyed reading and jazz and in high school he played the trumpet and the tuba; more recently, he taught himself to play the drums. He was a member of Providence United Methodist Church for over 30 years where he made many lifelong friends. He was a fan of big words and he had a playful sense of humor. He was many things to many people: a charmer, a loyal friend, a family man, a teacher, a physician and all around good guy.

A Celebration of Life Service will be held at 2 PM, Saturday, April 28, 2018, Providence United Methodist Church, 2810 Providence Road, Charlotte. The family will receive friends in the church atrium following the service.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the American Lung Association, or to Hospice & Palliative Care, Charlotte Region at PO Box 470408, Charlotte, NC 8247.

I met Walter in January of 2015 when I bought his house on Bentway Dr. The home is a warm and special place for me and my family. He was kind and generous, and I wish I had spent more time with him. My best to Jane and the boys and family.
