Wilbur Whitaker Obituary

Wilbur Edward Whitaker
Mr. Whitaker, 85, of Charlotte, died Monday March 27, 2006 at Liberty Nursing and Rehab Center. He was born August 31, 1920 in Gretna, VA to the late Baxter R. Whitaker and Myra Moon Whitaker. He served in the Marine Corps during World War II and fought in the South Pacific. Mr. Whitaker then went on to attend Virginia Tech where he graduated with a B.S. in industrial engineering. After graduation, he was employed with General Electric where he worked for over 30 years and later retired. Mr. Whitaker loved his adorable cat, 'Smarty.' He was a Paul Harris Fellow in the Charlotte Rotary Club and was a dedicated golfer and member at Myers Park Country Club. He always attended the Friday Morning Breakfast at Christ Episcopal Church where he was a member for many years.
Mr. Whitaker is survived by his wife, Nancy B. Whitaker of Charlotte, NC and his adopted son, Kelley Downy of Stony Point, NC.
A memorial service to celebrate his life will be held at 11:00 a.m. Thursday, March 30, 2006 at Christ Episcopal Church with the Rev. Martin J. Bagay and the Rev. Dr. W. Carter Lofton officiating. Interment will follow the service in the Memory Garden at the church. The family will then receive friends in the Blue Room.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial contributions be made to Christ Episcopal Church, 1412 Providence Rd., Charlotte, NC 28207 or the Humane Society of Charlotte, 2700 Toomey Ave., Charlotte, NC 28203.
Harry and Bryant Company is serving the family of Mr. Whitaker.
