William McGoogan Obituary

William Hardison McGoogan

October 13, 1953 - April 3, 2024

Charlotte, North Carolina - William "Bill" Hardison McGoogan, 70, died peacefully Wednesday, April 3, 2024, surrounded by his loving family.

Bill was born in Asheville, NC on October 13, 1953, the son of Edward and Ann McGoogan. Bill grew up in a wonderful home, with his brother Graham and surrounded by friends that he kept throughout his life. He excelled in the Charlotte-Mecklenburg school system before going to high school at McCallie School in Chattanooga, TN. He completed his undergraduate degree at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and Belmont Abbey College.

After college, Bill returned to Charlotte and soon began what would become a 32-year career at Consolidated Planning, retiring in 2016. Bill married the true love of his life, Anne, on July 19, 1986, and within a few years they were blessed with sons Will and Stuart. As a young father, in furtherance of his career and dedication to his family, he took night classes at UNC-Charlotte and passed all four parts of the CPA Exam on his first attempt. He also put this knowledge to work as a pro bono tax preparer for those in need.

Bill was a natural athlete. He loved playing basketball with his many friends and neighbors every Saturday morning for many years. Even before the birth of his own children, Bill enjoyed sharing his time and talents by coaching youth basketball at the YMCA. He continued to volunteer his time by coaching Will's and Stuart's T-ball, baseball, and basketball teams. "Coach Bill" was a kind, fun, knowledgeable, patient coach who cared about each child on his teams.

Bill was an avid, lifelong golfer. His proudest golf achievement was teaching his boys to play and the many years of rounds they enjoyed together. Though reluctant to admit it, Bill was a talented and accomplished golfer, highlighted by his two hole-in-ones and numerous tournament victories at Myers Park Country Club. In retirement, Bill enjoyed multiple rounds per week with his Myers Park golf group, who became some of his closest friends.

Bill was a dedicated UNC Tar Heels fan, a passion that he shared with family. Bill loved the beach and some of his happiest times were spent on the Carolina coast with Anne. He enjoyed spending time with his wonderful extended family and his many dear friends. Bill was very grateful for the numerous blessings in his life. He was an amazing son, brother, husband, father, and friend and a true gift to all who loved him.

Guided by his faith in God, Bill had a strong yet calming presence about him, making everyone he met feel welcomed and at ease. Bill's profound sense of humor made an impression on all who knew him. He was a kind-hearted person, exemplified by how supportive and deeply caring he was for his family. His wife and sons were the pride of his life.

Bill is survived by his beloved wife, Anne Smith McGoogan; sons, William Hardison McGoogan Jr., and his wife, Laura, of Richmond, VA and Stuart Gordon McGoogan, and his wife, Logan, of Charlotte; brother, Edward Graham McGoogan Jr., and his wife, Grace, of Charlotte; and numerous cousins, nieces, and nephews. He was predeceased by his parents, Edward Graham McGoogan and Elizabeth Ann McGoogan.

A service celebrating Bill's life will be held at 2:00 PM on Friday, April 12, 2024, at Christ Episcopal Church, 1412 Providence Road, Charlotte, NC. The family will receive friends following the service in the Blue Room. The service will be livestreamed at: https://christchurchcharlotte.org/watch-live-funerals/ for those unable to attend in person.

Memorials may be made in memory of Bill to Levine Cancer Institute, the Humane Society of Charlotte, Christ Episcopal Church, or The First Tee of Greater Charlotte.

"To laugh often and much, to win the respect of intelligent people and the affection of children, to earn the appreciation of honest critics and endure the betrayal of false friends; to appreciate beauty, to find the best in others, to leave the world a bit better whether by a healthy child, a garden patch, or a redeemed social condition; to know even one life has breathed easier because you have lived. This is to have succeeded."

- Ralph Waldo Emerson

Ann, I was friends with Bill when I lived in Charlotte many moons ago and went to Queens. Your husband was an ace of a guy and funny as all get out! That deep voice and his sense of humor were absolutely priceless. We had a lot of laughs at Sundries and boy I knew exactly where he would be standing when I walked in the door.
I bet he was a stellar husband and father to your boys. I am so sorry to hear of his passing and hoping his end was not one of pain and anguish. I can´t imagine how much you will all miss him. My thoughts are with you and your family during this huge adjustment and loss...Prayers for healing and comfort . Julie Dunn Bec
