Dr. Alan Hirsch was a great friend, full of vigor, humor and compassion for his patients. I worked with him at many medical conferences and he treated me the best. He cared and he showed it at all times. I will miss his endless energy. Peace to his entire family.

I spent over 2 years writing a PAD paper with him, so important that it has been cited >3000 times. He led it, cajoled, brought along, created consensus, and shone an overall light, brilliance, and warmth that reflected in all. I'll always remember a private dinner we had in New Orleans. What a loss to so many. My honor to have known him.

I just wanted to send a note to the family of Alan Hirsch. We met Alan last Sept when my dad was brought to hospital. He remained our doctor until we heard the very sad news. In fact we just met with the day before he left for Florida. Of all of the doctors we worked with, Alan was by far the best doctor we have ever had. He was more than a doctor, he was caring, genuine, sometimes funny or tried to be :), great listener, a talker and always made us feel like we were the only ones he had to see that day. My dad and I were shocked and saddened by the news and while I know we dont know the family, I wanted to share our story with you and to let you know that Alan was one of a kind, he will truly be missed but never forgotten by our family. Thoughts and prayers are with you all.

One of the most compassionate and smartest men I have ever worked with. He taught me so much as not only a physician, but as a human being. My heartfelt condolences to Sue and his family.

I knew Alan only virtually, through a project we worked together on over the past 2 years. He imparted warmth and kindness even through simple phone calls. He was truly a mensch. I am terribly sorry for your loss.

Alan was so much more than my Physician: He gave me the courage to live my life without fear after my massive dissection. His humor, his humanity restored my balance in life and helped to set me free. He will always be in my heart! I grieve today!

Alan was a model for the way physicians ought to be. Yes, he was smart and worked hard. But, more importantly, he cared. He cared about doing what was best for his patients. He was not afraid of holding their hands, laughing and crying with them. Alan was a mentor to me. He is with me when I am caring for patients, and when I am teaching others to care for patients. I miss him greatly and send my deepest condolences to Alan's family. The world could use more Alan Hirsch's.

My deepest condolences to Alan's family. He was an amazing, kind and generous man, and he will be greatly missed by all of us whose lives he touched. Despite his being so very busy, he always had a moment to catch up, and always had some chocolate in his office which he offered freely. May your memories of him comfort you at this time of grief.

To the family of Dr. Alan Hirsch. Your father was an extremely fascinating man. I met him 20 years ago when he came to our rehab clinic asking us to do research with him in PAD. I was the fortunate one to work with him and I will miss him dearly. We will strive forward in his honor and start a Supervised Exercise Program as that was his dream.
Sincerely,

Sue,
As I write, I'm thinking about the last time I saw you and Alan, hiking around Angel Island and having a picnic before our 35 year UCSF medical school reunion. You were both lively and funny, and I thought how wonderful that the two of you were together since you seemed like such a great match. Alan and I had lunch together earlier and talked about our lives since last reunion, and he told me how happy he was in his life with you, with his work, and with the many things he was doing.
I spent many days with him backpacking and river rafting during medical school, and he was always a positive guy. He offered his warmth and kindness freely. He had so many ideas and plans to have fun, I can't yet believe I won't see him again.
I am so sorry for your loss, and I am so glad that he had you in his life for these past years.

Over the 20 years I have known Alan, all I have seen from him has been kindness. As a joint friend of Alan and mine once said "Alan would give the shirt off his back if he knew you were in need". It is a tremendous personal loss for all of us.
