Albert "Mike" Fairchild, 71, of Downers Grove. Passed away peacefully at his home Sept. 12th. Mike is survived by the love of his life, Rita, son, Brian (Maria) Fairchild, daughter Michelle (Jim) Nelson, Terese (Ted) Weglarz, and Maurean Brandt. Brother of Barbara (Bill) Pierrakeas. Papa, mentor and best friend to 8 grandchildren and 4 great-grandchildren who he showered with love and encouragement. Preceded in death by his parents and son, Mitchell. Mike loved God, his family and NASCAR. He could fix anything from a broken car to a broken heart. We will miss him dearly and carry his spirit with us always. A special thanks to Family Centered Hospice and friends, family and neighbors who rallied around Mike during his illness and showered him with love. Visitation 3 to 9 p.m. Sunday at Hallowell & James Funeral Home, 301-75th Street Downers Grove, where service will be held at 11 a.m. Monday. In lieu of flowers, please honor Mike's memory with a random act of kindness. Mike will be laid to rest with his son Mitchell at a later date. Funeral info: 630-964-6500.

We'll never forget how Mike came to stay with us when Linda had a heart attack, he helped us out during a difficult time and we are so thankful for him being there for our family. We'll also remember how he went to every Coney Island in the area, looking for "Flint" coneys, finally being sucessful taking some home with him. Our thoughts and prayers are with you and your family. God Bless

Mike has always been my big brother in every way for the past 25 years. Mike and Rita have been my only family in this area but we are related only by love, and I love them dearly. They are my youngest son's Godparents. Mike was so teasing yet, so proud of my accomplishments with college and personal trials. When I asked him for advise, he would guide never tell me what to do. I will miss Mike everyday. Mike was my friend, neighbor, but most of all my big brother. I will miss Mike, but heaven has a new angel with a big smile and a Hey-Hey. Jan LaFrance

Rita. I will miss him and still cant believe he is gone. We need to have faith that God has a plan and he needed Mike. I will miss his humor and his smile. I feel so lucky to have had him be such a big part of my life and I thank you for bringing him into our family. The love you shared was inspirational...I know now you are heartbroken but Rita. you found your soul mate and were able to share so many great years together...how blessed you were.
