Dear Levine Family,

I'm so sorry for your loss. I met Barry in London on the walking tour and we had such a great time. I did not know him long but it felt like I did because he was so funny and easy to talk to.

We were not done Barry - I had stories to share, questions to ask, my right leaning opinion to share as well as your jokes to listen and react to. I am better for having known and worked with you over the years in several roles at HTLS, PALS, here at the State Library.

You made this world a better place with your contributions, touching many lives. You helped lay the foundation for the future of the Prairie Area Library System with a new director.

I am selfish and miss you already even though you can now read the Torah rather than listening to it. My prayers are with your family. You are truly a Mavin. Thanks for the memories Barry, unlil we meet again. Neil

Dear Levine family--

What a tragic loss for you and, if I may add, for the field of audio description. Barry was the highly-respected moderator of the Audio Description listserve, administered by the American Council of the Blind (ACB). He was not only an avid description user in both media and performing arts; he served so many others as the President of Audio Description International. Most recently, Barry had agreed to chair the Standards Committee for ACB's Audio Description Project and was leading several other description efforts.

Barry was a trusted friend and valued mentor; the nation has lost a forceful and impressive advocate for audio description.

We all miss him; and we will remember him this summer at ACB's First Annual Audio Description Project Conference when we award the Barry Levine Memorial Career Achievement Award in Audio Description.

Dear Levine Family,
We were with you in grief yesterday, and we learned so much about Barry's very impressive accomplishments. What a wonderful son, husband, father, brother and friend! We are comforted to know that
he was devoted to his family and to his

Dear Phyllis:

I was so saddened to hear of your loss and the loss to your children, family, friends, and to the community. Barry was such a nice man and so very interesting to talk to. I will always fondly remember our chats, during my "breaks" at FTR. Barry will be dearly missed by all whose lives he touched. I am so very glad I had the oppotunity to get to know Barry. God Bless and keep you and your family.

Love,

Dear Phyllis and family,
My heart is broken for you; I cannot imagine how you feel. Just know that my thoughts and prayers are with you and I know what a strong and amazing lady you are. You and your family will get through this difficult time. I love Barry, he was such a great man to work for, and so supportive and caring during a difficult time many years ago. I have never forgotten him and all the good he did for me. Though i unfortunately never picked up a phone, I have often thought of you guys. I know that Barry is in a better place.

Barry will be so missed by so many. He touched us all with his pursuit of a more just, more accessible world, and the benefit of that work will live on for a long time to come. I wish him peace, and we who are grieving our loss of him will find our balance and carry on with the memory of his voice to keep us moving forward.

I am so enriched for having known Barry. He challenged me without judging me, supported me without patronizing me. He could always make me laugh and sometimes made me angry, and I am so thankful to have called him friend. His sudden loss is breaking my heart.

Others will praise his superior contributions to physical rehabilitation, to public libraries, to equal access for people with disabilities, and every word will be true, but it is the very real person at the core of all of that excellence in service that I remember – the man who could doubt and worry and dig a little deeper to find the energy to try again, the man who could poke fun at himself and tell some of the most awful corny jokes, the man who understood the flaws in all of us while always finding our strengths and encouraging us to reach a little higher.

So I’m following what I think would be Barry’s advice, keeping my workout appointment, washing clothes, preparing to go on my scheduled trip to Seattle tomorrow, continuing the dance of life. However, periodically, I find myself with a tissue in hand, sitting in the floor with Farlow who offers me her sweet dog love as comfort for a sadness she doesn’t understand, as I gather memories over the years to write this farewell. I would much rather be hearing Barry’s voice over the phone chastising me for not responding to his last e-mail in a timely manner, but that’s yet just another memory to take forward with me. I promise to keep working at it until I reach the point when I can feel the net gain of his presence in my life more strongly than I currently feel his loss. I think he would approve of that offer.

I wish peace and healing to his family who he adored and shared through stories of trial and triumph. Even those of us who never met you, feel a sense of kinship, and I wish I had more to offer you than the sharing of your grief.
