Charles W. Carberry

Charles W. Carberry, age 85, of Naperville, IL, formerly of Lansing, passed away peacefully on Friday, Jan. 20, 2012. He is survived by his daughter: Carol (Craig) Brashler of Naperville; nephew: Fred (Marie) Phares; niece: Nancy (Tom) Crowel; and many great nieces and nephews. Mr. Carberry was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Edna, in 2008 and his nephew, Steve Tabor. Funeral Services for Mr. Carberry will be held on Wednesday, Jan. 25 at 11 a.m. at the 1st Presbyterian Church of Hammond, 6021 Hohman Ave., Hammond, IN. Interment will follow at Elmwood Cemetery in Hammond. Friends are invited to visit with the family on Tuesday, Jan. 24 from 3 to 8 p.m. at the Schroeder-Lauer Funeral Home, 3227 Ridge Rd., Lansing, IL. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Tabor Hills, 1347 Crystal Ave., Naperville, IL, 60563. Mr. Carberry honorably served his country as a sergeant during WWII in the U.S. Army stationed in the Philippines. He was a newspaperman for many newspapers, but primarily for the NWI Times. He was a member of the American Legion, a member of the 1st Presbyterian Church of Hammond, and a good friend of the River Glen Presbyterian Church in Naperville. After retiring, he became more active in his church, delivered meals to shut-ins for Meals On Wheels, volunteered as a Hammond Helper at Wallace Elementary School in Hammond, worked as an Election Judge, and served on the Mayor's Council for Senior Citizens in Lansing. He enjoyed golfing, pool, bowling, and listening to and watching baseball. He loved history and was a Civil War buff. He was a dog lover and considered everyone he met his friend, and he will be dearly missed by all who knew and loved him. www.schroederlauer.com
