Dear Stein Family,
My sincerest condolences to you on the loss of David. I am a teacher at Central School and had the pleasure of getting to know David when he participated in Science Olympiad. He worked hard, had a wonderful sense of humor, and a great personality. May you find comfort in the many beautiful memories you have had with him. My prayers are with you.

My deepest condolences go with you at this time. I was David's English teacher in 10th and 12th grade and will always remember him as a brilliant thinker, a fearless individual and a good, and decent soul. His college essay was so beautiful, I remember it to this day; it was a marriage of the joy and intellectualism that David brought to all his pursuits. All my prayers are with you at this time.

Dear Stein Family,
I was truly sad to hear about David's passing. I remember him fondly as a two year old, big grin, glasses slipping down his face and hands clapping! He stands out as a favorite child from my early days at Parkside Children Services. I was also fortunate to have his sister Rachel for a brief time as well as his cousins Abby and Hannah. A note to friends posting here (from Seth's sister): I have read your messages (through July 3) to Seth, and he was so touched by all of them- he was speechless. Thank you for reaching out to our family at this difficult time.
You may want to read an online article about David in the University of Chicago student paper- the Maroon, which you can find if you search University of Chicago Maroon David Stein.

Dear Seth and Carol,
Please accept our deepest sympathies on your loss. We had not seen David in many years, but probably our fondest memory of him was on the Kishwaukee canoe trip in the rain. When we asked him what to do about replacing your canoe, he said simply, "Get a purple one!" He will be missed greatly by those who knew him.

This is the e-mail I sent to Chavurat Or, the traditional egal minyan at University of Chicago Hillel:
A typical David Stein thing to say amongst all this would be
to say, "Stop the seriousness!" But, as things stand...
David Stein was a relatively quiet but kind and reliable
person. He came consistently to our services on Friday night,
and was eager to help with Torah readings when we had them. He
truly reveled in UChicago-ness, from his love of Scav and all
things geeky to the incredible amount of time he devoted to
neurobiology and working in the lab. While he was not someone
to seek and grab attention, he was a consistent and friendly
presence at Hillel on Shabbat, which is how I got to know him. We will miss him greatly.
I cannot believe I am writing about him in past tense.
May his memory be for a blessing...
"So long as we live, they too shall live,
for they are now a part of us
as we remember them."
--Rabbi Jack Riemer and Sylvan Kamens
