I don't make a practice of reading the death notices, but today while paging through the Chicago Tribune, I saw a name that caught my eye and triggered my memory. Even now, I'm not absolutely certain that the Dennis K. Moore in the obituaries was the same one I knew more than 30 years, but I strongly suspect that it is. He would be about 55 years old now, and his wife's name was Doreen. I knew him when he was no more than 21 and I was 26. We were both assistant editors for Kiwanis Magazine, at that time located on Erie Street at Rush Street in Chicago. It was my first real job, and I think also Dennis'. We both worked under the eyes of the executive editor Clark Inglis, who was ... well, an odd duck, and the fatherly Bruce Crippen, the publications director, who also offered shots of scotch to his staff members at Christmas time. Every morning during the Christmas season, the Kiwanis employees would gather around the Xerox machine and sing Christmas carols. It was looking back, probably the most pleasent places where I ever worked. As I recall, Doreen worked in the secretarial pool even before Dennis came. I thnk she worked mostly for the two youth organizations, Key Club and Circle K with Gary McCord, who always displayed a Canadian flag on his desk, and his boss Mr. Lucas, whose first name escapes me.

Dennis came to mind because I often listen to the to WFMT, the classical radio station in Chicago, which has an announcer named Dennis Moore. I've often wondered if it was the same person, but obviously it wasn't.

Several months ago, while working at the fine jewelry section at Marshall Field's, I encountered another face and name from the Kiwanis past: Kenneth O. Johnson, who was the magazine's production editor. Though Johnson is an even more common name that Moore, I asked him if he was the same person who worked at Kiwanis, and it turned out it was. As I ratlled off names and he did the same, it was amazing how many people we both remembered.

Dennis came to work at Kiwanis in the summer of 1968 and I had been there since December 1967. In March 1970, I left to work for the National Safety Council, for what turned out to be an 18-year career. Clark Inglis eventually went to work for Rotary. I lost contact with Dennis after leaving Kiwanis.

I remember Dennis as a excellent writer and a good editor, who was also convivial company. I'm sorry to hear about his bout with cancer. My condollences to Doreen, whom I knew and remember, and to the rest of the family, whom I did not.
