Dr Donald Liu- great human, great soul, we will miss your humanity for ever.

May 4, 2013

My heart is so deeply sadden. Looking through pictures, I came across Children Hospital of New Orleans article on Dr.Lui and my daughter. So, I decided to search for Dr. Lui and came across topics of his death. 15 years ago my daughter was one of those kids who he ran to in the middle of the night for an emergence surgery that saved her life.

I just found out today about the tragic news. This world has lost such a fantastic person, that words can not describe.I am terribly saddened by the news, and shocked. When I heard he had passed, I wondered what had happened to him, and then I read about the heroic act that cost him his life. It didn't suprise me, because that was the kind of person he was, so kind and so giving. Our hearts and prayers go out to Dr. Liu's family and friends

Don was my mentor, boss, teacher, but most importantly, my best friend. I will cherish the 10 years I was his nurse. He taught me everything I know about caring for children and their families and for that, I will always be greatful. Thank you for everything Don. I will miss you so much.

I think I have thought about Dr. Liu, Dana and the children at least once everyday since he died. He is an inspiration to us all and although Dana and the children miss him terribly, they were so fortunate to have such a wonderful husband and father.

I remember Dr. Liu from Children's Hospital in New Orleans. His expertise as a surgeon was only surpassed by his compassion. In the end, he died doing what he did on a daily basis, saving children. God bless you Dr. Suskind and your beautiful children.

The shock and sadness is just barely wearing off. I hugged Don goodbye this past July 23rd after staying with him and his family, looking forward to their planned upcoming visit to DC. Little did I know what would soon happen but am so glad to have seen him one last time after 25 years of both of us being busy building careers and families and too far from each other. In Taipei, the group of us "nerds" used to go to his house almost every weekend and just hang out together. We all looked up to him, he was always number one and our leader. Dana wanted to know about his past and asked me if he had changed since high school. As of last month he was the same as back then--easy going, generous, helpful, always concerned about others, unbelieveably patient, extremely difficult to anger or annoy (although I did see it twice in 35 years but, hey, nobody's perfect!). At Asher's and Amalie's baseball games, with Don being the "team doctor", I saw those traits all over again. Don, I've got to say it but it's too bad you never did get to meet Kate Jackson. ;-) A lot of people will miss you big time. I've always thought of you as a brother, especially since your mom used to jokingly call me her "Italian son". Other than your own family, no one will miss you more than I will. I'll see you, buddy.

My wife calls me a picky eater with no desire to try new foods. She may be right. So, when I found myself at the same dining table with Don in China, I couldn't not respond to his enthusiasm. "You have to to try this, you must try that". Sea Urchins, Eel and mostly unidentified food, not bad - sharing the sheer joy of this and many other moments with Don - priceless. Missed, but remembered.

Don Liu was simply one of the nicest, kindest people I have ever known. I had a chance to visit him and Dana when they were living in New Orleans, and it was clear that he was doing what he always had a passion to do, and that was being the best doctor that he possibly could be. Don Don, you influenced me to aim high and strive to be the best. Thank you. Rest in everlasting peace my friend.

i last saw Donald in 1980 when we graduated from high school and we went our separate ways. However, the passage of time does not lessen the memories I have of him; they are as vivid today as they were so many years ago. I feel privileged having known him early in his life when his curiosity, optimism and kindness had already made an impact on all of us in his high school class.

My thoughts and prayers go out to his family.

August 11, 2012

I too graduated from Taipei American School with Don. He really was an amazing person, he was never anything but a positive, upbeat person. It saddens me so much to know how his family, colleages, patients, and friends are all feeling his loss. Don touch so many lives and I am very proud to say he was my friend.

God Bless you!

Donald and I were classmates at Taipei American School. He was our class valedictorian, although he preferred no one know that. I loved his intellect, his wit and his clear thinking. There is no surprise that Donald went on to become such a fine father, husband, surgeon and human being. This tragedy is a loss to us all and I hope that you find comfort in the knowledge that he was loved by so many.

Where do I begin? Dr. Liu was an incredible human being as well as an outstanding, caring and compassionate surgeon...always uplifting, confident and positive. He has helped my daughter through her medical issues over the years and would always tell me that "she was just like his own". He was a hero to me then and he is even more of a hero today. For whatever the reason, God needed him more up in heaven so his light can now shine up there. My sincere condolences go out to Dr. Suskind and their three children. Rest in peace Dr. Liu. I will never forget you and you will be truly missed!

Donald was a dear and lifelong friend. All that knew him will miss him dearly. I am so sorry for the sadness and devastation that his going to Glory at such a young age has left on his family and friends. The outpouring of sympathy and condolences is a testament to the way Don lived his life and touched so many lives throughout his time here on earth. I will always cherish the memories I have of growing up with him in Taiwan. May God comfort and sustain you through this difficult time.

We met Dr. Liu on Oct. 31, 2007 a few hours after our daughter was born. Being a first time parent it was disturbing to hear that something was wrong with her at birth. At Edwards Hospital they assured us they had called in the best Doctor to take care of her. Once Dr. Liu arrived to examine Peyton he put our mind at ease and really helped us believe everything would be okay. At five weeks old, Dr. Liu performed surgery. We continued regular follow up visits over the years and were so amazed at how wonderful he was. We are so sad for his families loss, our heart goes out to his family and to the families whose children's lives could be greatly enhanced had they had the opportunity to meet Dr. Liu. He was a wonderful Doctor, but an even more wonderful humanbeing.

I went to high school with Don and we worked together in Student Government. I have been following his career since I saw Diana about a year and a half ago. We talked about getting together with Don when he next came to DC but we never did. I feel tremendous regret about it. I am so sad about his passing and pray that his family can find some peace, knowing that in his 50 short years, he made a difference in an incredible number of lives.

Dr. Liu helped my daughter. He diagnosed her with MALS after a year of no one being able to help her. The two moments that I want to share with you are when he came out of surgery and was giddy with glee b/c it went so well. Hers was the 14th MALS operation. She remained in the hospital for 11 days with unexpected complications, but Dr. Liu came to visit her once and brought her a huge chocolate chip cookie. He really was devoted to his 'kids'. I am so sorry for your loss. Know that you are in my thoughts and prayers.

We believe Dr. Liu helped in saving Lacey's life and just a few weeks ago performed a surgical procedure on her lungs. Both Dr. Liu and Dr. Suskind made Comer's hospital feel like a safe nurturing environment. After living there for 8 straight months this year, we always knew the two of you would make any parent and child feel at ease and as if we were totally at your level. The two most brillilant, wonderful, caring people. Lacey was in good hands a few weeks ago, knowing Dr. Liu contributed to saving her life.

Dr. Liu I met you through my Jayleen Castaneda a baby girl with Pulmonary hemorrage. It was the most horrific time for me and my husband and the most cherised times. She was critical everyday for 5 months. Her last hope was surgery and I would not allow it unless you performed it. You did your best, and you told me sincerely we have to wait but the look in your eyes told it all. You knew she would not probably make it, but I thank you and am grateful for you for the short time she had you cared for her and did the best that you could as a surgeon. You were a great gift from God to the children here. I know she has welcomed you in Heaven and thanked you for your efforts. My deepest condolenses to your wife and children.

Our family will be forever grateful to Dr. Liu. He performed surgery on our son, who had TEF, the day after he was born. When we were told the surgery would be done Monday morning, it was Dr. Liu who said he would personally find staff to stay and assist him Friday evening. He even returned from home late that night to talk to us when my sons stats dropped briefly. He was a wonderful, kind and compassionate man. We will never forget Dr. Liu and what he did for our family. The Liu/Suskind family is in our prayers.

To the family of Dr. Liu-
Dr. Liu performed emergency surgery on my son Jack the morning of February 17th 2007 when he was just 15 hours old. In just a few weeks, Jack will be starting Kindergarten all because your father and husband saved his life. My family and I were so sad to hear of his passing. We will never forget him and are forever grateful for all he has done. My deepest condolences for the loss of a wonderful man who has been such a hero in our home since that morning in February 2007.

August 8, 2012

I am sad to hear of Dr. Liu's passing. Dr Liu performed two surgeries on my son and he was not only a great surgeon, but a warm personality. I remember meeting Dr. Liu when my son was in the hospital facing surgery. Dr. Liu walked in, saw my 12-year-old son's video game magazines and asked him if he was a gamer. Dr Liu had with him a walk-through of the new Fallout game that was coming out, resulting in instant rapport with my son. More remarkable, he put us completely at ease in a distressing time, answered all our questions, and even gave me his cell phone number if I had any more questions. I am so sorry for his family's loss. Thank you for sharing him with his patients.

Dear family members of Dr. Liu...Your husband, father, fellow Physicans, many friends...and all who knew and loved this man, one of God's very chosen men. This remarkable Dr. walked this earth for far too short a time, but his love and dedication to life and his work will be felt for years to come. I read about him two years ago, and the research he had done for patients with MALS.(median arcuate ligament syndrome)..and how he performed an operation on a young college girl from Long Grove, Illinois...saving her life...At the same time my beautiful granddaughter in Ohio was a patient for the seventh time at the well known Cleveland clinic. The Dr. there were treating her for anorexia and she was 13 years old at the time...and wasting away right before our eyes...but my son-in-law read more about Dr. Liu and got in touch with him at the Chicago Childrens hospital...he said he would see my g.daughter to explore if she would be a good canidate for surgery to undue the kink in her intestine...her parents came from Ohio in late June...and right after July 4th, 2010, Dr. did do the operation and it was a success...Today my g.daughter is very alive and healthly. There will never be a time in her life when we watch her grow into a lovely young adult, bloom like a flower because of this wonderful surgeon...how grateful we as family are for his knowledge, love and concern for others...What a gift from God to all who knew and loved him..thank you...

August 7, 2012

We are eternally greatful to Dr. Liu and very saddened to hear of his death. We met Dr. Lui in 2003. Our son Steven was diagnosed with osteosarcoma which eventually went to his lungs. Dr. Liu performed 8 surgeries on Steven never giving up on him. We were told that many other doctors would have told us there was no hope but not Dr. Liu. He operated on Steven without hesitation. He gave us his home number and told us to call anytime, which we did and his encouragement helped us get through a very difficult time. Steven is still with us thanks to Dr. Liu 10 years after he was diagnosed. We owe our son's life to him and don't know what we will do the next time Steven has a scan and Dr. Liu won't be there to look at it. He was like no other surgeon we have ever met. A truly caring and wonderful person who meant what he said when he told us Steven will get through this. We thank him from the bottom of our hearts.

We are so sad to hear of this tragic news. Dr. Liu performed 4 thoracotomies during my 14 year olds battle with cancer. He was exceptionally kind and caring and he personally walked us through the shock of our son losing his battle. Our deepest heart felt sympathy to the Liu Family. Dr. Liu performed all of my son's major surgeries. We always knew our son was in great hands with Dr. Liu.

My deepest condolences to the entire family, and extended family. Dr. Liu was a special human being and his love of his profession was deep. He will be missed by so many of his patients, friends, colleagues, former colleagues, and of course his family. May he rest in peace in the arms of the Lord. He is gone from us much too soon.

My deepest sympathy goes out to his wife and children. I did not know Dr. Liu and am envious of those were privileged to know him and work with him. It's obvious he was dedicated, kind, and giving, in that he gave his own life to save two little boys. May God bless.
