Dudley Powers

Dudley Powers, born June 25, 1911, in Moorhead, Minnesota, passed away on February 22, 2004 in Bradenton, Florida at the age of 92. Dudley Powers was a member of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra from 1933 to 1953 and attended Juilliard before earning his bachelor's and master's degrees at Northwestern University. He came to Northwestern in 1931 as an instructor in the School of Music. In 1955, he was appointed professor of cello. During his time at Northwestern, he served as chair of the string department and cellist in the Eckstein Quartet, as well as teaching throughout his tenure. Mr. Powers also conducted the Chicago Youth Orchestra (1955), the Skokie Valley Symphonietta (1956), and the Fox Valley and Racine Symphonies (1957). He was a member of the Mischakoff String Quartet and Wicher-Powers-Reuter Trio. He played with the Chamber Music Society and Sheridan String Quartet before retiring in 1979. Many of Mr. Powers' former students are orchestral players and teachers in important positions throughout the United States. Mr. Powers is survived by his wife, Dorothy; his daughters, Jean Todd, Anita Prouty, and Eileen Buchanan; his son, Arthur Powers; eight grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.Donations can be made to Banner Health Foundation B.G.S.
