EDITH McCORMICK Obituary

Edith McCormick, nee Desort, passed away on October 31 in Chicago (age 76) after recent surgery. She worked at American Libraries the magazine for the American Library Association as an editor for 31 years. Edie was a news writer as well and wrote two columns "Image" (still in publication) and "Public Perception." She graduated from Barrington High School in 1952 and in 1959 graduated with a Bachelor of Arts from the University of Chicago. Cosmopolitans to the bone, she and husband Jim were accomplished ballroom dancers, entering and winning many contests and they danced into the late hours of every top Chicago bistro of their time. Her husband, Jim McCormick, was a Chicago Tribune editor and author of many books. Jim served in the U.S. Army Air Force during World War II as a decorated pilot of a B-24 heavy bomber. Edie and Jim were great lovers of life, the kind of elegant and sophisticated couple you would find in an F. Scott Fitzgerald story. They were truly the stuff of great romance. Edie McCormick is survived by her best friends and caregivers, Carla and Matthew Owens; her sister, Elaine; step daughter, Janeen Podgorski (and husband Ralph); sister-in-law, Cookie Desort; niece, Karen Stubler (husband Joe); niece, Nancy McCormick (partner Keith); granddaughter, Amy Podgorski; grandson, Jean Pierre Henderson (wife Paige); grand nephew, Mike Stubler; and grand niece, Laura Stubler. Edie is survived be her beloved Llewellin setter, LuLu and Romeo, her cat. A memorial service is being planned for November 13 at 11 a.m. at St. Peter's Episcopal Church, 621 West Belmont Avenue in Chicago. Condolences may be sent to Carla and Matthew Owens, 507 W. Briar Place, Chicago, IL 60657. Donations to Heifer International http://www.heifer.org or to PAWS Chicago.

I only met Edie once, when she travelled all the way to Sydney to be part of my sister Paiges wedding to her grandson, Jean Pierre Henderson. I remember her to be friendly, charismatic and graceful. My sincerest condolences to all of her extended family and friends. Amanda Lintott

Edie, as she was known to her neighbors in our Lakeview Condos building, was a good neighbor and friend to me for the last 7 years. My life has been enriched knowing her, talking with her, and watching her gentle daily influence on our little condo community. She will be missed by all who knew her.
