Bernice Allen, age 101, entered peacefully into eternal rest at Passages Hospice on Saturday, March 7, 2026. She was a native of Waggaman, LA and resident of Avondale, LA. Bernice received her Bachelor of Arts in Social Science from Leland College in 1948 and continued advance studies at the University of Chicago and the University of Southern California (USC). She later obtained her Masters degree in 1971 from Southern University. Bernice dedicated over 36 years of shaping, guiding, and mentoring young minds to unlock their true potential as Elementary Teacher and later as a Principal with the Jefferson Parish Public School System, prior to retiring in 1981. Her impact inspired and encouraged students to pursue their dreams. She was also actively involved in her community and church, Second St. John Baptist Church in Avondale, LA. Beloved daughter of the late Graylee and Victorine Powell Allen. Devoted sister of the late Alphamine Allen. Loving cousin of Walter (Marie) Burrell, Mable Williams, Bradley Williams, Nathan Williams, Marylee Alexander, Mildred Powell Birden, and the Winchester Family. Although Bernice never had any children, she loved her fur babies as her children, Moby Allen, Sr. and the late Toby Allen and Moby Allen, Jr. Bernice is also survived by a host other relatives and friends. Relatives and friends of the family, also pastors, officers, and members of Second St. John Baptist Church and all neighboring churches; employees of West Jefferson Medical Center and Passages Hospice are invited to attend a Visitation at Second St. John Baptist Church, 242 Avondale Garden Road, Avondale, LA on Friday, March 20, 2026, from 4:00p.m.-7:00p.m. Homegoing Celebration will be held on Saturday, March 21, 2026, at 10:00a.m. Pastor Damian J. Brown, officiating. Visitation will begin at 8:30a.m. until service time at the church.
