Enid Silverman Obituary

Enid Silverman, nee Salamoff, age 58, beloved wife of Paul; loving mother of Elizabeth Sigale (Keith), Nori Gleeman (Jay), Brett (Melissa) and Jeremy (Gitta Satryani); proud and loving grandmother of Danny and Clara; caring sister to Judith Barman (Ken); and friend to her Welsh Springer, Bailey, who stayed at her side during her long illness. Enid had a Master's Degree in Home Ec Education and taught high school Home Economics prior to serving in the Peace Corps. Enid spent two years in Malaysia teaching at the Mara Institute of Technology, the other M.I.T. in Petaling Jaya, Malaysia. After returning to the United States Enid felt a calling to become a nurse. After her fourth child was born Enid returned to school and became a nurse while continuing to nurture her family. She obtained an Associate's Degree from College of DuPage and became a Registered Nurse. She later received a Master's Degree in Nursing from Rush University. Enid continued her education becoming a Clinical Nurse Specialist and ultimately a Nurse Practitioner. The last 10 years of her career she was Director of Pulmonary Rehab at the Rehabilitation Institute of Chicago. Even though she enjoyed directing the department, her first love was patient care. For over three years Enid held her own against Cancer of the Brain. For most of that time she continued to work, traveled extensively throughout the world, visited her namesake, Enid, Oklahoma - something she had wanted to do for years, shared the joy of the weddings of her son, Brett and daughter, Nori, and the birth of her first granddaughter, Clara. Enid served on the Board of Directors of the American Lung Association of Metropolitan Chicago and was an active member of DuPage-Will Hadassah. Funeral Services will be held Friday, Aug. 26 at 11 a.m. at Congregation Beth Shalom, 772 W. 5th Avenue, Naperville, IL. Burial will follow the service at Naperville Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, Enid's family asks memorials in Enid's name be directed to the American Lung Association of Metropolitan Chicago, 1440 W. Washington Blvd., Chicago, IL 60607, attn: Joann Morrone or DuPage/Will Hadassah c/o Robin Stanton, 2S021 Deerfield Lane, Warrenville, IL 60555. Info, Piser Funeral Services, 847-679-4740.

Paul and family,

I was a nursing colleague and friend of Enid's and will always believe that it was with her help and encouragement that I made it through my nurse practitioner clinical classes. We sat next to each other in those last few classes before graduation and she was always providing words of encouragement and friendship. I will greatly miss her kindness and smiling face. She was very proud of her family and we often shared stories. My thoughts and prayers are with you and your family.

To Enid's Family and Friends:

Enid became part of my late husband Jack’s and my life in 1997 when he joined the “Breath of Life” Pulmonary Rehab Exercise Class at the RIC, and he cherished every time he saw her until his own death in July 2002. She was a rare and genuine angel and the true soul of the place - cheerleader, coach, therapist, drill sergeant, teacher, nurse, advisor and true friend to so many – not just her patients, but their families too.

May the gift of love and caring she gave to so many bring peace and comfort to her family and loved ones!

With gratitude and heartfelt condolences -

Paul and family, Know that my thoughts, prayers and heart are with you. Enid was my mentor, my colleague, but most of all my friend. She has touched so many lives and we are all better people for having known her. The wonderful people that your children have become is a testament to both you and Enid. I will always be here for all of you. Love Joanne

The Nursing Assembly of Metropolitan Chicago extends its deepest sympathy to the Family and Friends of Enid Silverman.

Service is the rent we pay for the privilege of living on this earth." Enid Silverman was a rarity... she 'practiced what she preached' & she 'had the courage of her convictions'. She taught much to many... and will not be forgotten. May the memory of all that you instilled in her, the accomplishments that she sustained during this life, and the fact that you will be with her in eternity comfort you during this time.
