Betty Heycke

In 1952 Ernie Karmin signed the papers which made it possible for an 18 year old German boy, Dieter Heycke, to come to the United States. The Karmin family paid for his sea trip and they arranged for a German-speaking couple to meet him in New York and transport him to Chicago. In Chicago they took him into their home and gave him a job. Ernie and Kurt Karmin were his big brothers, his mentors, his friends.
We , our children and grandchildren , celebrate Ernies life and mourn his passing. He
was part of our family.

Ernie let me use his office to hang my hat when I was first starting out in 1978. A truly nice man who was a legend in the meal pit. My condolences to his entire family.

I only know Ernie through the love of his son, and his stories about him. But through these stories and that love I could tell Ernie was a great father a fun man and loving and beloved head of his family. My condolences go out to his family and friends for this terrible loss. I know however his love will linger in your hearts forever.
