Now retired, I can´t reflect on my mining career without thinking of Frank. I hope his family is doing well.

I remember with fondness that Frank and I could work in fishing excursions when on business trips. One in particular arose from a shuttle ride from Rome Georgia to the Atlanta airport. This was back in the early 1980s. In conversing with the driver he mentioned that he had a bass pond on his property that nobody fished in. He gave me his number and the next trip down there Frank and I brought our fishing stuff. I caught several bass on a fly rod but Frank reeled in a huge bass which we kept and shared for dinner with the property owners. We fished there several times after that.

I always thought Frank was older than I, since I pal'ed around with his younger brother Steve. Frank was always the voice of reason and wisdom; Steve was the voice of adventure. It is really a sad time. My (our)hearts go out to his loving family.

Dear Arlene and family,
Frank will be remembered fondly by so many and for so many different reasons. My connection with Frank was as a fellow member of the Chicago Section of the Society of Mining Engineers. Frank provided many years of solid leadership, friendship, collegiality, and good humor -- I always looked forward to seeing Frank at our meetings. He will be missed.
Very sincerely,

Frank's reach is much further than the mining industry. I have a different perspective of Frank. I was on the team that hired Frank and his team to help us design a power tunnel. I was given the impossible task of managing Frank. As a result I learned how to be a successful consultant. He later taught me how to be an expert witness. He also taught me, as a young civil engineer, not to argue with the Vice President of Construction of GA Power and to shut up after he had won the argument. He kicked me under the table! Frank was a mentor to so many of us. Frank chaperoned my first date with my now wife, but that's a different story. Frank, I will miss you.

Frank hired me for my first permanent full-time job and we had a lot of great times together. I will always think of those when I think of Frank. His stories and observations were invaluable to young engineers, and he was easy to relate to. He was, I think the instigator of a certain certificate that all of the employees signed and presented me at my bachelor's party. I still have it and I think it is one of the most clever and outright hilarious things I ever read. Frank will be missed.

I am deeply saddened. Frank made both the mining industry and its practitioners better. I remember finalizing proposals into the early morning hours; eating steak with our pocket knives on rock plates, under the starry Wyoming sky; and trekking out of Dinosaur Canyon. Frank just made things happen.

Ican echo what John Head said -- Frank trained many excellent engineers who are now well-known in the field themselves. With respect to his contributions to rock mechanics, his many awards from his peers speak for themselves. Frank, you will be missed.

Frank was a mentor to many engineers and geologists. He gave a lot of us our first job in the mining consulting business. Our success is due to his initial faith in our abilities. Thank you, Frank. I just wish I had thanked you in person. All the best, John Head
