FRANK HUSSEY Obituary

Frank Larkin Hussey, Jr., M.D., distinguished Chicago area Radiologist and Radiation Oncologist died April 26, 2010 at Lutheran General Hospital. Frank was born on April 15, 1926 in Milwaukee. He grew up in Chicago and Wilmette and graduated from New Trier High School at the age of 17 in 1943. Too young to join the military he attended Northwestern University where he wrestled and was a member of the Phi Gamma Delta fraternity. In 1944 he enrolled at the United States Merchant Marine Academy, Kings Point, Long Island, NY. During 1944 & 1945 Frank served on the U.S. Army Transport - Santa Cruz in the South Pacific. Frank graduated in 1946 in Engineering (Steam & Diesel) as a Commissioned Ensign in U.S.N.R. He went on to earn his B.S. and M.S. degrees at the University of Cincinnati. Frank received his M.D. in 1955 from the University of Cincinnati, College of Medicine, and interned at Cook County Hospital and specialized in Radiology as a resident at the Veterans Administration Research and Presbyterian - St. Luke's Hospitals in Chicago. In 1960 Frank became a Board Certified Radiologist and Diplomat of the American Board of Radiology. Dr. Hussey was an attending physician, radiologist and radiation oncologist from 1959 to 1995 at Lutheran General Hospital and Alexian Brothers Hospital. At Lutheran General Hospital he was Chairman of the Department of Radiology from 1968 to 1971, and served as President of Medical Staff in 1974. Dr. Hussey was an active member in many medical societies and was honored by numerous awards. He was president of and received the Gold Medal award from the Chicago Radiological Society and was also the recipient of the Gold Medal award from the Radiological Society of North America. For 35 years he was passionately involved with the American College of Radiology where he served on numerous Boards, Committees and Delegations. Frank's interest in medicine precipitated his membership and involvement with the American Medical Association where he served on many committees including the Chairmanship of the Cancer Caucus and Council on Radiology. Frank was at the forefront in the fight against cancer using radiation therapy and was an Attending Radiation Oncologist and conducted research at the Fermilab - Cancer Treatment Center in Batavia, IL. Frank was a member of The Church of the Holy Comforter in Kenilworth and St. Paul's Episcopal Church in Steamboat Springs, CO where he served on the vestry. He enjoyed numerous outdoor activities with his family including small boat sailing on Lake Michigan, coaching ice hockey in Wilmette, snow skiing in Colorado and golfing everywhere. Dr. Hussey was a generous supporter of numerous charitable organizations and community programs. He was a member of Michigan Shores Club, Wilmette where he served as President and Board Member; Skokie Country Club, Glencoe; and the Over the Hill Ski Club, Steamboat Springs. He is survived by his wife of 62 years, Dorothy Lidecker, New Trier class of 1945; and his children Frank III, New Trier - 1967 (Gail) of Wilmette, Sharon Handler, New Trier - 1968 (David) of Eldorado Hills, CA, William, New Trier - 1971 (Madeleine) of Houston, TX, and Michael, New Trier - 1976 (Monica) of Albuquerque, NM. He is also survived by seven grandchildren, Brittany Handler Toft, (Kenneth) CA; Lauren Handler, CA; Ashley Hussey, CO; Caroline Hussey, TX; Matthew Hussey, TX; Alanna Hussey, IL; and Martin Hussey, NM. A funeral service and visitation will be held Saturday, May 1, 10:30 a.m. at The Church of the Holy Comforter, 222 Kenilworth Ave., Kenilworth, IL 60043. A luncheon to follow at a location to be announced at the service. Frank was the reason I ended up at Lutheran General Hosp. for 30 years. We meet at Fermi Lab and he encourage me to look at a job in medical physics at LGH. He was always supportive and a great man to work with. One of the friendliest doctors I've known. Thanks Frank for your encouragement and support over the years.
