FRIEDRICH KATZ Obituary

Friedrich Katz, 83 years old, of Chicago, on October 16, 2010, in Philadelphia. Professor Katz was a distinguished scholar of Mexican history, whose major work on the Mexican revolution drew acute parallels with major trends in global historiography. His wide interests extended from the study of Aztec society to an account of Mexico's diplomatic role in World War I. Katz taught at Humboldt University in Berlin before joining the Department of History at the University of Chicago, where he taught for 40 years. Katz was born in Vienna and raised in Berlin to the age of six, when his family fled Nazi Germany to Paris. In 1938 the family fled to New York. Unable to gain permanent resident status in the U.S., they found refuge in Mexico, sparking Katz's lifelong interest. Katz is survived by his widow Dr. Jana Katz, a pediatrician; his daughter Jacqueline Ross, of Champaign Urbana, his son, Leo, of Philadelphia; and four grandchildren. Funeral services will be held Tuesday October 19 at 2 p.m., at Joseph Levine and Sons Memorial Chapel, 4737 Street Road, Trevose, PA. Interment will be held in Vienna, Austria. Dear Dr. Katz, It is with sincere sadness that Mrs. Rogers and I learned of Professor Katz's passing. It was a pleasure knowing him. The residents of Lake Point Tower will miss you both. I trust you will be happy in your new abode close to your family in Pennsylvania. Please accept our condolences.

Prof Katz has left us;
we have lost a dear and a great friend of History, a great friend of Mexico. A loss for all the free people of the world, a loss to the University of Chicago; even a loss for Pancho Villa.

I had the opportunity to meet him once and I told him that I was from the State of Chihuahua and that I admired the work he did on the history my state. I told him that he made Chihuahuenses like me, proud. He told in return that he lived and loved Chihuahua, where he once lived as a young man. He was named honorary citizen of my homestate. He then said that being my fellow Chihuahuense was one of the proudest honors he had in his life. Believe me, I was speechless... My sincere condolences to the family of this erudite, humble, irreplaceable and kind man.

Sergio Saenz, University of Pennsylvania.

My condolences to Dr. Jana Katz, who was my daughter's pediatrician. Like my in-laws, Prof. Katz and his family were Jewish refugees from Vienna and he managed to build an extraordinary tricultural life of accomplishments. Our thoughts are with his family and he will be remembered on Nov. 20, the bicentennial of the Mexican Revolution, at the Revolución! Concert in Chicago.
