George Edgar Spaulding, 2023 Mallard Drive, SE, Grand Rapids, MI died Sept. 5, 2008. His ashes were inurned in a niche adjacent to the niche of Katherine Richter Spaulding at Graceland Memorial Park Mausoleum, Cascade Rd, Grand Rapids, MI. Born in Toledo, OH, Aug. 19, 1920, George attended Toledo schools and the University of Toledo through 1938. In the spring of 1939 he won a competitive appointment to the U.S. Naval Academy, Annapolis, MD and was the first of several three-year wartime classes to be graduated on June 19, 1942. He served in the Navy until 1948 and was recalled to active duty during the Korean War. George was proceeded in death by Katherine Richter Spaulding, Dorothy Elmendorf Spaulding, two sisters, Grace Elizabeth (J. Thomas) Bowen of Columbus, OH and Ruth Janice (Harry) Seubert of Toledo, OH. He is survived by his children George E. Spaulding III (Cheryl) of Charlotte, NC, Sue (Fred)
Champion of Lansdale, PA, Katherine Stern and Susan (Kenneth) Penning both of Grand Rapids, Richard Elmendorf of Los Angeles, and Holly Elmendorf of Atlanta, GA; eight grandchildren; nine great grandchildren; nieces and nephews. A Memorial Celebration of George's life, officiated by Pastor Chris Lane, will be held on Saturday, Sept. 27, 11 a.m. at Metcalf & Jonkhoff Funeral Home, 4291 Cascade Rd SE, Grand Rapids, MI metcalfandjonkhoff.com
