Howard Galper Obituary

Howard David Galper, 91, passed away peacefully on November 18, 2022, surrounded by his beloved wife of 63 years, Barbara, and his three children at Ascension St. Joseph Hospital, Chicago.

Born to Reva, nee Berkson, and Jack Galper in Chicago on August 3, 1931, Howard was the product of Lithuanian immigrant parents who arrived in Chicago from Vilnius and Mariampol before World War I.

Raised in Hyde Park and Oak Park, Howard grew up in a sprawling, close-knit family that included his grandparents and numerous aunts and uncles from the old country, the progeny of whom now numbers in the hundreds; he was proud of how remarkably close the family has remained.

A 1948 graduate of Oak Park High School at age 16, Howard was a gifted writer of poetry and prose and a lifelong voracious reader. He graduated from Yale College with an English degree in 1952 and from Yale Law School in 1955 and then embarked on a 67-year legal career.

After serving in the U.S. Navy from 1956-58, Howard returned to Chicago and started the law firm Feiwell & Galper, which grew and thrived for more than 30 years. Howard enjoyed a broad and varied practice that spanned real estate, trust and estate planning, and corporate law. Some of his early clients were residential real estate developers, and Howard's work over decades helped them create today's Greater Chicagoland area. Beyond his practice, Howard gave back through work with a number of charities and nonprofits over the years, including Thresholds, the International Horn Society, and an array of arts and theater organizations.

Howard is survived by his loving family: wife Barbara; daughter Amy (Steve Marcus); son Adam (Giselle) and grandsons Noah, Aaron, and Gabe; and son Josh (Erin) and grandsons Bennett, Theodore, and Nathan. Howard was preceded in death by his parents, Jack and Reva, and his older sister, Miriam "Mimi" Targ. Howard took enormous pride in his six grandsons, frequently visiting them with Barbara.

Private services were held on November 22, 2022, at Temple Sholom in Chicago, IL, and at Westlawn Cemetery in Norridge, IL, where Howard joined a host of other family members in burial. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation (https://give.cff.org/tribute/howardgalper) and The Parkinson's Foundation (https://www.parkinson.org).
