I had the pleasure of working with Joanie at Virginia Mason Medical Center in Seattle where we were both Breast Cancer Care Coordinators. Joanie was a caring, compassionate nurse that gave her heart and soul to her patients and they loved her for it. We shared and office and would often share stories of our lives which included many similarities, having both grown up in large Catholic families in the Midwest during the 50's and 60's. She was very proud of her children and all their fine accomplishments but nothing made her happier than being a grandmother. She cherished her family and friends and will be greatly missed.
May she rest in peace.

I had the pleasure to work with Joanie at Virginia Mason in Seattle. Together we were the Breast Cancer Coordinators for the Breast Cancer Team. She was a great colleague as well as a caring, compassionate advocate for all of our patients. They loved her as much as we did. We shared an office and during that time shared stories and had lots of common denominators, having both grown up in large Catholic families in the Midwest. She loved her family and spoke fondly of her children and their accomplishments. But nothing gave her more joy than being grandmother. She was so happy to have been able to share part of her life with the newest additions to her family.
I will miss her smiling, happy face. Peace and love,
Rita Kelly

My condolences to George, John,Emily and Michael and baby Henry and all of Joanie's siblings. Joanie was such a fun spirited woman and God Bless her eternal life now with God and the heavens above. I'm so happy you no longer suffer and are in pain.
I remember my time with you and Peggy at MSU and will never forget the short time so long ago we could laugh as cousins. I made my god moms (your moms recipe for our dinner Spinach Lasagna.)
Your incredible endurance and strength and courage will help all of us look forward to keeping ourselves on your path of how to really be a person who can really follow life's journey.
Thank you for your gift of inspiration toAll of us.I love you Cousin Judy

My condolences to the family. Joan or as we knew her Joanie was a wonderful advocate for patients. She could solve any problem and ease any anxiety that a patient had. She brought her warmth, courage, smile and expertise to every day. I loved working with her and she always brightened my day. She selflessly gave to others. She is missed.

I'm a breast surgeon at Virginia Mason Medical Center and knew Joanie when she was one of our Breast Cancer Nurse Navigators with Rita Kelly. I'm sure I can speak for all of us who worked with her. She was so loved by patients since she could show them that life went on after being diagnosed with breast cancer. She was open with patients about being treated for Stage IV breast cancer for years and would show them her port when they were faced with chemotherapy. She was always a patient advocate, optimistic, cheerful, and enveloped patients in kindness, hope and understanding. We all loved Joanie as much as our patients did. She put up a long fierce fight and I'm sad to hear she has died. A moment of reflection and a toast to an inspiring colleague and friend. From strength to strength.
