John had a huge impact on my life as a young man. I remember always seeing Pat and Betty walking their dog. We lived across the alley from each other in Logan Square and I always watched him as he worked on his cars. He called me over one evening and said, "Sit down. Gas, brake, clutch. Pump the brake and hold it down." I spent the next 6 years helping John swap motors, transmissions, interiors, pushing MGs and Austin Healys from one garage to another and from one side of the street to the other during street sweeping. I had my first mechanics tool set before I was 13 and a Craftsman cabinet and chest. He suggested that I apply to Lane Tech and was happier than I when I was accepted. I witnessed John and Maureen's wedding. He stopped over with 2y/o Johnny during the Christmas season. I am so sorry that we lost contact, but always thought about him. My sincerest condolences and prayers for John's soul, Maureen, John, Sheila, Margaret, Jim and Mike. Eternal rest grant unto John, o Lord, and let perpetual light shine upon him. May his soul, and the souls of all the faithful departed, though the mercy of God, rest in peace.

My name is Ray Pate, I've known John since 1979, In fact I was there when he met his wife Maureen. It feels so strange to call him John I always knew Him as Chicken Man a story that we shared with others many times and laughed about so many times. I want to say how sorry I am to hear about this. To Maureen and his family I just want to say I'm here if you need me for anything. He will be missed, Please don't hesitate to reach out if you need me. Again so very sorry.

John was one in a million. During my eight+ years working with him on uniforms and spirit wear for the athletics program at St. Luke, I can honestly say there wasn't one conversation where his wry, sarcastic humor didn't have me laughing out loud. I could tell how proud he was of his family, and how close they were (despite his put-on "cranky" demeanor). And I know my husband and late son Jimmy appreciated the folks you brought to McNamara's when they played there. I'm so sorry for your sadness and loss. Hope you find strength in each other and in what's likely a limitless supply of "McNair!!!!" stories. Hug to you from the Dooley family.

Condolences to all John's family and friends. Won't be the same walking around Chopin Pk and not seeing John going to or from his car. John was a huge factor in getting and keeping my children playing baseball and even working at the stands and umpiring a bit. John will be missed by all. RIP
