JOHN PLIMPTON Obituary

John Conrad Plimpton, 44, passed away suddenly the morning of August 12. John was a long-time resident of Princeton, Hopewell and Lambertville, NJ. Born in Evanston, IL., John's childhood home was Wilmette, IL. John was co-founder and principal of Equinox Fund Management, an alternative asset manager. He had a background in alternative investments, initially marketing products to institutional and retail investors and spearheaded the sales efforts of some of the most respected advisors in the alternative investment community, including Beacon Management, Willowbridge Associates Inc., and QFS. John specialized in the design, development, and distribution of innovative investment products for under-served market segments. Among noteworthy accomplishments, Equinox Fund Management created the first public managed futures fund with daily liquidity; more recently the first mutual fund to offer an actively managed portfolio of CTA programs. John was known for being larger than life in stature, humor, wit and intellect. He worked and lived passionately. He, most of all, loved time with his family and friends. He attended Deerfield Academy (MA.) and was a graduate of New Trier High School (IL.), a graduate of U of Chicago in Economics and earned an M.B.A. from the William E. Simon School of Management (NY.). John was born June 15, 1966. He is survived by his children David Richard (17), Jack Cooper (14) and Audrey Lauren (12), his former wife, Lori Pecket Plimpton, his betrothed Rebecca Fazzina; and his parents, Conrad and Ann Plimpton of Tucson, AZ, former Princeton and Wilmette residents. He is also survived by brothers (Michael, David and Steve); and sister (Sarah Murphy); and ten nephews and nieces. A brother (Peter) predeceased him. A memorial service will be held at Princeton Academy, 1128 Great Rd, Princeton, NJ on Monday, Aug. 23 at 3 p.m. with a reception to follow. In lieu of flowers, please send donations to Misericordia Home, 6300 N. Ridge Rd, Chicago, IL 60660, Attention: Kevin Connolly, in honor of John Plimpton. www.misericordia.com.

My deep condolences to your family of John!
I worked for you as a babysitter in September of 2003. It was the most beautiful experience and beautiful adventure of my life. Your family was kind and loving. I have learned so much from you. I appreciate how you helped me realize my dreams of becoming both a model and singer. Thank you! I will always remember you.

I had the honor of meeting and working with John regarding his work on the Chi Chi Rodriguez Youth Foundation Board of Directors in Florida. John was always giving, full of ideas and keen to help children reach for the stars. Most of all I enjoyed his humor and genuine kindness. Through his efforts, John helped hundreds of children reach out and touch their dreams. We will miss John greatly and we hope that his work here on earth brings comfort to his family and his good friends especially Bob Enck with whom we worked closely.

I am saddend to hear of John's passing. He was not only a brilliant intellect, he was gracious and humble as well. John left this world having made significant contributions in terms of his business accomplishments, but I'm sure those that know his family would argue his most prized accomplishments are the tools he provided them for the day they would go forth without him. May you all find peace in the strenght and love John has given to you.

I worked with John to add the Frontier family of funds to Schwab's alternative investment platform. I am shocked and saddened to hear of John's passing. He was a pioneer and visionary for the alternative investment industry. He was a trendsetter in industry efforts to make diversified alternative investment strategies available in easy to use structures for individual investors. Most of all he was a true gentlemen and a friend. I am sad to see him move on.

I knew John through our affiliation with the IPI and, briefly, Outward Bound. He was idealistic and possessed a first rate and genuine intellect. We would all be better off with people like John in our lives and I will always have fond memories of him. Tom Hodgman
