I knew Father Tapper through Boy Scouts Troup 309 approximately 1974-6. He was a class act!! We had summer camp in Wisconsin, it was storming in different directions, he afraid for us, took us to a safe spot, hunkered low to the ground and we got wet but were safe. I was the token protestant in the Troup and got my religious medal and he always was proud to tell everyone how hard I worked compared to how easy it was for the Catholics. I think it was easier for me than them. RIP Father Tapper!

Father Tapper helped me through the darkest time of my life, when my 25 year old brother, who was also my best friend, died in an accident in 1976. Six years later, I was planning my wedding. By then, Father Tapper had left Lake Zurich and moved to Prospect Heights. I asked if it would be possible to have him return to St. Francis de Sales to officiate. We were happy and grateful that he was willing and able to be there. It was so wonderful, after having him with our family during such a tragic time, to then have him with us again to celebrate a joyful occasion. We will celebrate 36 years of marriage this summer, and on every anniversary I think of him fondly, and say a prayer for him. For some reason, he was on my mind today. I said to my husband, Where do you suppose Father Tapper is by now? and when I Googled his name, I came upon his obituary - and strangely enough, the fact that his memorial service had taken place earlier today. Had I seen it a day earlier, I would have attended. To his family and loved ones, please accept our deepest sympathy. Father Tapper was a kind and compassionate man who will remain forever in our prayers.

Father Tapper sprinkled his gift of kindness and thoughtfulness onto my family. He remembered, although I don't know how, that our son, David, loved trains. Unbeknownst to us, he was an avid train enthusiast, as well. Father Tapper never forgot and would give him a train calendar each year. It was such a thoughtful gesture and one I'll never forget. Enjoy heaven, you certainly deserve it!

A marvelous and welcoming pastor during his years at St. Ansgar's. We appreciated his compassion and understanding and jovial attitude toward life. He was also a fellow train enthusiast making him a very human friend. Mary Ann, his sister, was supportive of his hobbies and wishes. We will miss his Christmas greetings full of news.

There will always be a special place in my heart for Father Tapper. His sweet and loving homilies to first communicants made me proud to prepare the children for the sacrament. Father was kind, generous, and loving. Truly a wonderful priest and human being.

Rev. John Tapper is my cousin. His mother and my mother were sisters. First, Jack was always interested in trains. In the 1950's he would give me his old Model Railroader Magazines which I really enjoyed. His interest included riding classic trains. When my son Chris was about 10 years old, Jack took him on a special steam train trip from Elmhurst that lasted into the evening and returned to Elmhurst. Second, Jack was involved in Boy Scouts as an adult leader. He went camping often and became a member of the Order of the Arrow. This is a brotherhood of scouters dedicated to camping and service to others. Jack attained the Vigil Member rank in O.A. which the highest and very rare. In 1985 he attended the Eagle Scout court of Honor for my son Chris and made an Eagle Charge for continued excellence. My other son, Jason, worked with Father Tapper to earn his Parvuli Dei religious award. Jack also participated in Jason's Eagle Court of Honor in 1991. In June of 2013 Father Tapper presided over a memorial mass for my son Chris who was killed in the line of duty as a Special Agent with the FBI and a member of the Hostage Rescue Team. We all appreciate the time we spent with my cousin Father Tapper and will miss him.
