Please accept my condolences upon the death of 'Pepe.' I lived four houses away from the old fire house on Loomis St. in which Engine Co. 28 and Truck 8 were stationed. I was there until I was married in 1958 and before then I got to know dozens of good men who worked from that location. Not the least of them was 'Pepe'whose first assignment was on Truck 8. I was the #1 fire fan there and I knew many fun filled hours in their company.

I remember Joe especially because of his strength which resulted from his early work in subway construction. After he was promoted to engineer I would visit Engine 67 for a cup of coffee. I had a job that made it possible. He was always happy to see anyone from his prior station.

He and some of his friends installed a cyclone fence at my home and 25 years later when we had to move, it was as good as new.

He was a hero in the Marines and a fine firefighter; what more praise can I extend?

I hope he is at rest now.
