Kenneth Stein Obituary

The great Doctor Kenneth Stein, born on May 6th, 1954, went to a better place at the age of 64 on Wednesday, July 18th 2018 at his home in Chicago, Illinois. He was surrounded by his 3 adoring sons, Brett, Dixon, Mac and his loving and dearest partner, Bregetta "Skeeter" Robinson. Kenneth was an exemplary Medical Doctor. He earned his undergraduate degree from Brown University and went on to study medicine at Loyola-Stritch School of Medicine at Loyola University in Chicago. As a freshman, he served as President of his class. He did residencies in Otolaryngology at Loyola University Affiliated Hospital in Maywood, Illinois and Plastic Surgery at the University of Louisville Hospitals in Louisville, Kentucky. He completed fellowships in Microsurgery at Amelia Brown Frazier Hospital and the University of Louisville Hospitals. He further advanced his skill set at the Clinique Belvedere and Hospital Des Enfant Malades in Paris, France. He held certifications from the Board of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery and the American Board of Otolaryngology. He was a member of The American Academy of Otolaryngology Head and Neck Surgery, The American College of Surgeons, The American Medical Association, The Chicago Medical Society, The Chicago Society of Plastic Surgery, The Illinois State Medical Society, Lipoplasty Society, Inc., The Midwestern Association of Plastic Surgeons and The Latin American Society of Plastic Surgeons. Indeed, he had a passion for surgery and cared deeply about his patients. Beyond Ken's outstanding academic and professional accomplishments, he was most proud of his three sons: Calvin Brett Kirchdorfer, Dixon McQuaid Stein and Mackendrick McKay Ladwig Stein. Predeceased by his father, Clement McQuaid Stein, Jr., mother, Marion Stein and brothers, Kimber and Jim Stein, he leaves behind his siblings, Monica Sica, Marilee Shannon (Bob), Margie Silverman (Terry), Nancy Devinney (John), Clem (Kevin) Stein, Sisters in Law, Carol Stein and Alison Stein, and his nieces and nephews, Melanie Joseph, Nicole Sawtell, Allyson Lazzara, Scott Shannon, Megan Musacchio, Karilee Shannon, Michael Hankin, Katie Randall, Lauren Devinney, Lisa Devinney and Clement Stein, IV. He also left behind extended aunts and uncles, great nieces, nephews and cousins, and beloved friends, all of whom he dearly loved and cherished. Ken's hobbies, interests and passions added to the richness of his life. He was on the swimming and diving team at Downers Grove North High School. He continued his diving career at Brown University and was elected captain of his team. His love of sports would continue through cars and horse racing; he bought a 1970 GTO and went on to have a 2007 Mustang GT500. He attended the Kentucky Derby for over 35 years. He was a Chicago Bears season ticket holder for over 30 years. Ken's life took a real turn after the Bears won the Super Bowl in 1985; he became a Chicago man! He went on to join his Father's (Clement) golf course at Beverly Country Club where he made many friends and had many cherished moments. He became a wine aficionado and member of the Commanderie de Bordeaux Wine Society of Chicago. He also bought a small ownership in Diversey River Bowl where he loved to bowl and sing Happy Birthday to strangers and friends alike. No matter where he was, Ken was always a singer and a showman. One of his most beautiful qualities was the desire to make people happy and to entertain them. His motivation to be a performer came from Elvis but his songs transcended genre; he did a mean rendition of "Secret Agent Man." He truly was "sweeter than wine." Ken was a humble man with a character beyond reproach and an enormous smile. He was genuinely thrilled by the triumph and success of others and pained by their troubles. He was a passionate friend to a diverse and grand collection of people from all walks of life. An intensely charitable and loving man, Ken brought an extraordinary positive light to the world. Every year he traveled with Hearts in Motion, a mission group, providing surgery to Central Americans in need. Ken's larger-than-life presence will be missed but he will live on through those whose lives he touched. In Lieu of flowers, Ken asked donations be made to Hearts in Motion, 2210 Highway 41, Schereville, Indiana, 46375. A celebration of Ken's life will be held at the Beverly Country Club between 3:00 to 5:00 p.m. on August 18th, 2018.

I consider my life better for having known him. I met Kenny in 1997 when I was married to my late husband Seymour. Kenny was my plastic surgeon for many procedures in those years. I left Chicago after Seymour died and moved to Wisconsin. I was diagnosed with cancer in 2013. I kept in touch with Kenny off and on-thru all these years.
This morning I thought I would send him a text to wish him a happy new year and schedule my next procedure. Kenny knew I was waiting for a few years to pass after cancer treatment for my next procedure we had talked about. I spoke to Kenny in 2018 with plans to meet again in 2019 for my procedure. I trusted him completely with my life.
...And then to find He's been gone a year already and I never knew. I'm so sorry. Condolences to Kenny's family. So terribly sad and a true loss ..
Till we meet again my Friend. I'm so lucky to have known you
Love you. Mary Goldstein

So so sorry to read this Dr Stein was person I first entrusted with my surgeries and from there i always referred people to him not just because of the quality of his work but also the quality of his spirit. He was always kind to me and anyone I sent in to see him and even after I relocated to Dallas 10 years ago I always called or came in to visit trying to convince him I needed more work done but him being a man of morals and not money would say Monique you are just fine and look great but thanks for coming to see me. I'm so sad to here this i was planning to go by and see him when I was back home later this month. But I pray for strength for his children and family and would like to thank you all for lending such a wonderful spirit to us as his patients. God Bless and Rest In Paradise Dr. Stein you are missed!

Dr. Stein was my physician, mentor, and friend. When I entered medical school, he was thrilled and instantly committed to "showing me the ropes." He allowed me to shadow him on numerous occasions. I was going to wrap up my medical school career with a plastic surgery rotation with him, which sadly now will not happen. I wrote this tribute to him so that all might know the Dr. Stein I did. I truly miss him. https://mkgilmour.com/2018/10/05/a-tribute-to-a-dear-friend-and-mentor-dr-stein/

Kenny was one of the founders of the Fraternal and Honorable Order of the Cup. The Good Dr Stien served as our Musical Director, Head Entertainer and Lead singer and was a Multi-year winner of the treasured Cup. I called Kenny The Total Package, always singing and always laughing and His passing creates a void which is impossible to fill. Kenny Stien is now truly Under The Cupspell. God Bless Kenny.

Ken Stein truly was a one of a kind. I worked with him over 7 years and his joy for life was abundant. The Steinfests he and his family threw each year brought so many different people together to celebrate and enjoy life. I met a lot of wonderful people through Ken and pray he is at peace. Blessings to all his family and friends. Cheryl C. Rost, South Barrington, Il

Ken was THE man! When I went to my first Commanderie dinner before joining, I was the first one in the room and then Ken came in, sat down next to me and engaged in a warm conversation. We were friends from that minute on. Years later, he wound up fixing my deviated septum. When I was getting ready to go under for surgery, Ken said, "Geoff, I'm going to do you a favor and straighten this crooked nose of yours." I told him not to worry about it, let's just get my breathing corrected. The first thing he said when I came to after the surgery, looking closely at me with a huge smile was, "I fixed your nose!" I always loved seeing Ken, sharing a bottle of wine with him and just talking about the fun things in life. I can still hear and picture him singing Red Rubber Ball, the song by the group Cyrkle. Seeing Ken at a Commanderie dinner was always a highlight for me, a kind, smart, funny and fun loving, great man who will be missed dearly.

So sorry to hear of Kenny's passing. I haven't seen him in a few years and sad about that. I'm sure that anyone who has had the pleasure of meeting Kenny would wish for one more conversation with him. He was friendly and generous and many other things. His energy was incredible. I have seen him sing songs, do magic, some not-so-basic basic (actual) gymnastics, diffuse heated arguments and perform necessary first aid all at one event. Wasn't even a Stein Fest! I have also seen him listen intently and thoughtfully and simply offer to help. It was a unique gift to have known him.

I have known Kenny for 41 years as a fellow medical student at Loyola university. Knowing him made my life richer with his friendship. He was our first year class president with a presidential ball at his home with the entire class invited. Of course, he had a printed flyer promising a "kissing booth" and predicted that Elvis would be there. Even close to the end, I received that spark of life from Kenny. Will miss you

A great soul with boundless spirit has moved on. I first met Ken in Paris at the Hospital Des Enfant Malades where we quickly became friends and he taught me how to behave in front of the master; he was the hit when he sang a lively birthday song to Prof. Tessier.
As President of SLAPS he made everyone feel at home with his hospitality and enthusiasm.
We will remember his smile and charm.

I'm saddened by his passing, but will never forget his smile, his passion for life and his sense of humor. I will miss him dearly.

The world lost a great spirit with the passing of Dr. Ken. We were not the closest of friends, but that never mattered. Every time we shared time together it was quality time. His ear-to-ear smile, snarling laugh, booming voice (I can hear his "That's Great!!" as I type) and so many other traits will be missed. He left a mark on everyone who had the chance to get to know him, and he will be greatly missed. Sincere condolences to all those who mourn his passing. May he rest in peace and may his family and friends celebrate his life by fully living out their own. He would be thrilled that you did!

I have so many memories of Ken. Some are fit to print, others are not. Fun, enthusiastic, engaging and sincerely delighted in pretty much everything. He was my diving coach for a while. He taught me how to do my first double and to this day when I kick out, I still turn my head to the left where he stood. He was so persuasive. When Ken believed in you, it made you believe in yourself. Whether you were ready for it or not. There were a lot of welt inducing smacks and tears, but he wouldn't let me quit until I did it right. He knew I could do it. He was right. See you later up there. Not too soon, nothing personal Ken but someone has to keep the party going.

An incredible guy. One of a kind. No one will ever replace our Rockin' Docs' "Crazy Ken." The Center for Enriched Living benefitted from his talent and bouunding energy for 17 years.

We met at Brown in 1973 and we were immediate friends, musically, at the Brown Smith Swimmiing Center , and later here in Chicago within the medical venue. His patients and family loved him, of course. No one was more deserving.

There is no doubt that Ken is teaching Elvis the proper way to dance and they can compare their Blue Suede Shoes up there.

Brett, Dixon and Mack: you should be so proud of your dad's accomplishments and your bloodlines. We are so sorry for your loss, but he will be loved by you and will continue to inspire you each and every day of your lives.

May his memory be a blessing for you and your families.

Love to you all,
Fred and Sue-Ellen Duboe

So sad to have lost such a good friend and a great person. Ken made an enormous impact on my life by helping me to change a lot of things I didn't like about myself. Always a positive, happy guy, even when he was dealing with his own difficulties. I love you, my friend, and will miss you enormously!
