Lily Rose Obituary

Lily S. Rose passed away on August 21, 2018, age 92. She was not a diplomat, politician, actor or celebrity. She was simply the best of us. She celebrated family, helped people and gave a damn about what goes on in this world. Lily and her family escaped Nazi Germany and settled in Chicago. She went to Senn High School, Roosevelt University and the University of California at Berkeley for graduate work. She stayed in San Francisco, teaching special ed and then worked in human resources. She married, had two kids. And then her husband died. Returning to Chicago with two little children, Lily went to work at Roosevelt University, rising to become the Director of Admissions and Assistant Dean of Students. She helped generations of students succeed and was a leader at Roosevelt until she retired. For decades, Lily also volunteered at Northwestern University Hospital, helping families as they waited outside surgery. And she volunteered at the Off the Street Club on the west side. Helping still more people. It was not an easy life. But there was fierce love of family and the satisfaction of helping so many. Lily Rose is survived by her children Alan Rose (Susan) and Arlene Johnson (Paul – deceased). Grandchildren, Alex Johnson (Lynette Behnke and great-granddaughter Lilly), Jacob Johnson (Marisa Abegg) and Rebecca Rose. Sister, Marion Miller. Sister-in-law, Lois Sachs. Nephew, nieces, and their spouses: Todd Sachs (Marla) Betsy Westhoff (Mark), Ellen Alter (Michael), Susie Fogel (Art). She was preceded in death by her brothers, John & Fred Sachs.

Lily and I were at Senn High School together, then did not see each other until we reconnected as members of Emanuel Congregation. She was as warm, sincere, intelligent and interesting as she was when we were teenagers. It was always so good to see her at the High Holiday services. She will be missed. My deepest condolences to her loving and loved family. Natalie Saltiel

Lily was a colleague of mine when I taught at Roosevelt. We were also members of Emanuel about 11 years ago. The last time I saw her was at the Roosevelt retires luncheon. She always put the students first. We will miss her and are very sorry for you loss.

Mrs. Rose was my first contact at Roosevelt University in 1978. I had graduated from high school, uncertain what was next. In August, my dad suggested I visit Roosevelt ( we lived in a suburb). I met Mrs. Rose, filled out an application and the rest is history. I attended classes and had a job in the admissions department. After graduating, I moved away and did not get to the city during normal business hours, so have not seen Mrs. Rose for many years. I wish I had known her better. She sounds like a wonderful person and did make a big difference in my life, which I hope I am paying forward. My heart goes out to all who will miss her presence in their lives.

So sorry I was unable to come by today. Lily was the only Aunt that always reached out to Tod and myself and made us feel like part of the family. She was a very warm and lovely lady. We will miss her calls to us and Tod's calls to her. Our thoughts and prayers are with you. Best, Marla Marcus Sachs.
