Loretta B. Szmyd, nee Janas, of Norwood Park, beloved wife of Edward for 53 years; loving mother of Dr. Susan M. (Richard Schmidt) Szmyd and Rev. John S. Szmyd; proud grandmother of Theresa and Steven Schmidt; loving sister of the late Frank Janas, the late Rev. Edward T. Janas, C.R. and the late Virginia Piekarczyk; dear sister-in-law of Alice Szmyd; fond aunt of Christine Meyer, Barbara Goines, Thomas Piekarczyk, Rose Mary Ozga and Robert Leja. Loretta was very involved in Saint Thecla Parish. She was an active member of Saint Thecla Women's Council and Ministry of Care, and also a longtime volunteer with Resurrection Hospital Ladies Auxiliary. Visitation Wednesday from 4 until 9 p.m. at The M.J. Suerth Funeral Home, 6754 N. Northwest Highway, Chicago. Funeral Thursday, 9:30 a.m. prayers at the funeral home, to Saint Thecla Church. Mass 10 a.m. In lieu of flowers, memorials to The Women's Center, 5116 N. Cicero Avenue, Chicago, IL 60630 or to the charity of your choice. Masses appreciated. Interment Maryhill Cemetery.
