Mitchell Bergmann Obituary

Mitchell Bergman, devoted advanced practice nurse and lover of people, died at his home in Glencoe, IL, on July 26, after battling liver cancer for the last six months. Mitchell was well known wherever he worked and lived for his big smile, hearty laugh, and eagerness to befriend almost anyone. It was not uncommon for him to be on the streets of Prague, Czech Republic, or Madrid, Spain, and have someone call "Mitchell!" from across the street-an old friend from Philadelphia, Florida or Chicago. He was proud of his 35-years as a Registered Nurse. As a nurse anesthetist, he was valued by his patients for his expression of genuine caring at times when they were afraid. For him, health care was about taking care of the human spirit and not just about the latest technology. Whenever he had the opportunity to speak to young people about their career choices, he encouraged them to consider nursing, often following up by email or telephone to recommend particular programs. Bergmann moved to the Chicago area in 1997 with his domestic partner of 25 years, Henry H. Perritt, Jr., former Dean of Chicago-Kent College of Law. Having grown up in Philadelphia, he worked as a nurse manager, director of perioperative care, and manager of prison health in various Philadelphia-area hospitals and facilities. In Chicago, he worked at Weiss Hospital and then moved to Same Day Surgery. He received his Bachelor of Science degree from Union College in Kentucky in 1972, his Bachelor of Science in Nursing from Thomas Jefferson University in Philadelphia in 1977, his Certificate in Anesthesia from Graduate Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania , in 1978, and his Master of Science in Nursing from Gwenyd-Mercy College near Philadelphia, in 1986. He is survived by his partner, Henry H. Perritt Jr.; his son, Phillip Bergmann of New York; and his sister, Fridell Bennedetto, of Florida. The family will be receiving condolences Tuesday and Wednesday from 4 to 7 p.m. at 1131 Carol Ln., Glencoe. There will be a memorial service at a later date. It's New Years eve, just leaving the hospital and thought of Mitchell. He graduated a year ahead of me from Graduate Hospital school of anesthesia. So sorry to read of his passing. I'm glad he was able to travel and enjoy life.

Dear Philip and Hank,
The memories of Rosemont Ave will forever be in my heart. Mitchell was and always will be an amazing friend to my family and I. This is not a time of grieving, but instead, a time of celebration that such an extraordinary man could significantly touch the lives of everyone he has come in contact with.
Love and light,

Dear Hank and Phillip,
My heart goes out to you both.Mitchell was bigger than life itself....someone few of us are fortunate enough to have shared time with. Although my heart is heavy with grief at this time, just the very thought of him will forever bring a smile to my face. He was one of a kind!

My profound sympathies on the loss of Mitchell. Although I did not know Mitchell well, I feel I know him through Phillip, a son of outstanding character and charm. Mitchell certainly had to be a wonderful man, partner, and father. Again, I am very sorry for your loss.

To Hank and Phil,
I am so incredibly sorry to hear about your loss. Mitchell was such a wonderful person who welcomed me into his home and around his dinner table, and always entertained and warmed everyone nearby. Hank and Phillip,

I was shocked and saddened to learn the news about Mitchell. I will always remember how his laughter and easy going personality made everyone feel comfortable and welcome. I cannot imagine the difficult this must be for both of you. I want you to know that are in my thoughts and if there is anything I can do, please don't hesitate to ask. IV Ashton

Phil,

We are so sorry to hear about the death of your dad, which, as you can well-imagine, Carey shared with us immediately.

At this difficult time, and at all times, know that we are there for you...clearly part of "our" family.

We love you.

Hank, Phillip, and Fridell; our deepest sympathies on the loss of Mitchell. We will miss Mitchell's bigger than life personality. From his big smile you could see from across the room and his Mitchell laugh that was contagious- to opinionated discussions- to burnt bagels you could smell throughout our center, and everything in between. We hope we will all continue to show his love, care, and devotion to our patients and friends as he did. He will always be our "Honey," our "Sweet Heart," our "Baby Doll," and our "Dancing Queen". Mitchell's legacy will live on in the hearts of every one who knew him. We love you Mitchell! Your North Shore Family
