Naomi Lupel Berkowitz

1938 - 2022

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Naomi Berkowitz, nee Lupel, age 84. She passed away peacefully December 29th, 2022 after an 8 month battle with cancer. She left us on her own terms, surrounded by her family in a beautiful environment, brimming with love and satisfied with the knowledge of a life fulfilled. Naomi was a loving and devoted mother of Lyle (Dana), Sean (Shelly), and Janeen (David); cherished grandmother of Blake, Devyn, Laine, Calla, Ivy and Max; dear sister of Warren Lupel (Sally); caring daughter of the late Frank and Jeanne Lupel; and a great friend and mentor to so many others. Naomi was born in 1938 and spent her entire life in the Chicagoland area. She attended Sullivan High School, got a degree in Biology from Roosevelt University, and later in life an MBA from the Lake Forest Graduate School of Management, while working fulltime and raising three young children. Naomi's professional career was varied but was always dedicated to helping others, as she worked as a teacher and most recently as the Executive Director of the American Brain Tumor Association, retiring from there after 20 years in 2008. In retirement, Naomi continued to volunteer as a committed Board member for several not-for-profits, including Do The Write Thing OF Chicago and the Lou and Jean Malnati Brain Tumor Institute at Northwestern Medicine. Naomi was committed above all else to her family, and her pride and joy were her children and grandchildren. She was also a dear friend and mentor to countless others. Her passions included travel, reading, Scrabble, crossword puzzles, owl figurines and scalding hot soups. And she always had a terrific sense of humor. She will be greatly missed by so many people. A Memorial Service and celebration of Naomi's life will be held at 1pm on Friday, January 6th at Weinstein & Piser Funeral Home, 111 Skokie Blvd, Wilmette. A later burial will be private.
