Peter Fasseas Obituary

Peter A. Fasseas, 82, community banker and small business advocate, passed peacefully in his Laguna Beach winter home after a valiant, 15-year battle with cancer. A family man above all else, he was surrounded by loved ones.

Born June 10, 1939 in Chicago, Peter's formative years during the post-war era led him to attend Culver Military Academy for high school, where he learned the value of discipline and perseverance. In addition to serving in US Army Intelligence, he went on to Northwestern University for undergraduate and law school and was a lifelong Wildcat and Cubs fan.

As an attorney, he represented many hardworking small business entrepreneurs and grew frustrated by how difficult it was for them to obtain bank loans. In 1978, he and his wife, Paula, gathered a group of investors and purchased North Community Bank, a one-office bank near Wrigley Field. He began by making all the loans himself at a time when Illinois was a unit-bank state, which limited every financial institution to one location. Helping people obtain their version of the American Dream was his motivation, building small businesses and vitalizing communities. Under his leadership, Metropolitan Bank Group grew into the largest privately held bank group in Illinois, with 98 locations and 1,100 employees. In 2013, the company was recapitalized and turned into Byline Bank.

After his retirement, Peter continued serving the communities he loved through board and philanthropic service. He was a trustee and supporter of Culver Military Academy, the University of Arizona Foundation, the Hellenic Foundation, Chicago City Day School and PAWS Chicago, the organization his wife and daughter founded in 1997 that has grown into one of the largest No Kill animal welfare organizations in the nation.

Peter and Paula established the Fasseas Foundation, funding The University of Arizona Fasseas Cancer Center, supporting cancer research at Dana Farber and other leading medical universities, and providing resources to many other charities across the country.

Loved ones greatly miss his contagious smile, booming voice, unceasing positivity, passion for life (and the stock market), sound and steady counsel and grounding in the Midwestern values that he held true to throughout his life.

He is survived by Paula (Sfarnas) Fasseas, his wife of 46 years, his children Alexis and Drew, daughter-in-law Meghan, three grandchildren Katherine Polyxeni, Alexandra Ione, and Olivia James, brother Milton (Kathy) Fasseas, sister-in-law Jeannie (David) Howell and many loving cousins, nieces, nephews, and godchildren.

Wake and funeral services will be held at Holy Resurrection Orthodox Church in Tucson, Arizona on March 19, 2022 at 9:00 am. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in Peter's honor to PAWS Chicago or cancer research.

I was lucky enough to know Peter most of my life. As a kid, some of my first memories of him was his booming voice followed by his natural confidence and leadership combined with just having you feel like he knew what he was talking about. As I grew up, I opened my first restaurant at 25 years old...Peter noticed I opened a business account at his bank but what really grabbed his attention was 6 months later I opened my 2nd spot which was a hot dog stand at Navy Pier...Peter loved hot dogs and he always mentioned it.....it made me smile, feel great that Peter Fasseas noticed.....
At this point in my life, Peter was successful. The Greeks in our community looked at his success with admiration and the business people admired his healthy outlook on how to help, engage, support small businesses. I knew this from standing back and hearing the conversations which Greek businessmen talk about Peter as he walked into a room, engaging with people. They all admired his business sense and so did I.
6 months after I opened my second restaurant, I was running low on operating cash due the nature of the location (Navy Pier). My father suggested I call Peter and I distinctly remember my dad saying 'you know Peter but should get to know him better and surround yourself with guys like that. You're becoming a businessman and need examples of successful people like him to get advice, bounce ideas off of, inspire and mentor you'. I reached out to Peter, we met at his office and not long after that he knew about my business, understood my business needs, knew my family's history in the restaurant business and became my biggest champion in building my business. He understood small, family owned and operated businesses and knew hard work typically pays off. We did many many deals together and I have opened/operated 13 restaurants with the help/influence/encouragement/friendship of Peter Fasseas.
This man was a great example of the qualities I admire...hard working, smart/calculated risks, good morals, ethics, friendship, appreciated personal responsibility and knew about being a good leader, good citizen, a great example to others both up-and-coming and his peers.
I miss my chats with Peter but so grateful my father gave me that advice, so grateful that Peter responded.
I haven't met anyone else like him but hope others have the great privilege of having an influence such as Peter in their life.
May God rest his soul & I hope he and my father are enjoying time up in heaven

Since the 1960´s Peter has been a friend not only to me but the whole Loukas family. Our young families were close and in 80´s and 90´s we were able to work together on the redevelopment that took place in the Wrigleyville area of Chicago. North Community Bank, through Peter´s leadership, was instrumental to our work lending to our efforts at improving our neighborhoods. We thank you Peter for your friendship and foresight as our lead banker during those exciting and productive years.

May memory be eternal

Working for Peter for 11 years were some of the best years of my life. He was a kind and fair man, and took care of his employees. He definitely had a presence that made you take notice! I respected the fact that his banks truly were customer focused and the main intent was to help the local business community. He brought a lot of people together in that endeavor. Rest In Peace!

Paula and Family,

Although I hadn't spoken to Peter in over 35 years, I wanted to take a moment to honor him.

I met Peter when I was just getting into the municipal bond business in 1984 and he went out of his way to welcome me as a young salesman in the business. He always made time for me as I was building up my career. I was grateful then and I always remained grateful that he played a big role in my career success.

Little did I know that I would follow him in the shadows as my children started their education at Chicago City Day School and they spent their summers at Culver Military Academy.

I watched with pride over the years as North Community Bank seemed to always be at the top of the lists with returns that consistently beat other banks in the city.

He may have forgotten me many years ago, but I have always admired him and have always remembered what a wonderful human being he was.

We should all be so lucky to touch so many people in such a positive way.

May you Rest in Peace, Peter.

My deepest sympathies upon the falling asleep of your dear, Peter. I remember him well now some six decades later when he would vist my Aunt Connie and Uncle Bill ("The Chicken King") at their house for their New Year's Gala Name's day party. May Peter's memory always be eternal! !

No words can adequately console the family, but the best way to honor Peter is to continue the tremendous work that he and Paula began so many years ago, and continues today. I recently heard a perspective that said the best and most important work that needs to be accomplished is never completed by the first generation, but by those who follow. Peter began so many great initiatives, it's now up to all of us to continue them.

RIP Peter.....your work is in good hands!
