I too remember Mar Silverstein.
My memories go back a long
way to 1952 when I began
hebrew school at Beth-El on
the East side of Gary! I sang in
the choir later under Mar
Silverstein. I always felt close
to him, and he would accompany
me home on Shabbos. He
married Norm Greenwald´s
sister, Judy, who were close
friends of my brother, Jerry.
I have often thought of Phil.
He really lived a frum life
and his life´s dream was to be
a Cantor. He is missed.

I remember Mar Siverstein fondly. In addition to all of his teaching in class, he worked with me on some special melodies when we found out my bar mitzva would be on Rosh Kodesh. I remember him being amazed at my early rolling stone album that I brought to class one day. He had a good sense of humor, and a real caring for people. He will always be associated in my mind with that great edifice temple isreal - so many memories there, and so many memories of him - all good. . Paul Horwitz

I just received the sad news of Mar Silverstein's death. Anyone who attended Temple Beth-El in Gary will remember him fondly as their Hebrew school teacher and his melodic voice. He also had a great sense of humor. I can also proudly say he was my cousin by marriage as his wife, Judy was my second cousin. In fact, I was the flower girl at their wedding. I never really knew his children or grandchildren but my condoleances to all of the family. I am sure he is in a better place because he with his beloved, Judy.

Mar Silverstein was my very favorite hebrew school teacher at Temple Beth El in Gary, Indiana. He actually sang to me each time I walked into his class. My hebrew name is Shoshana and he would sing a song with the word Shoshana (rose) in the lyrics like "Erev Shel Shoshanim". Once there was a blizzard and I begged my mother to drive me to hebrew school so that I wouldn't miss a moment with Mar Silverstein.( I was the only one there so class was finally cancelled). But he was there too. I called him before my youngest daughter's Bat Mitzvah just to tell him how special he was. He said he still had pictures of all of us and I believed him! Today I am a Judaic artist and I owe a good part of that to my wonderful teacher.

Every child of my age/generation was postively affected by the good graces of Mar Silverstein. His wife, Judy was the daughter of Herman Greenwald, my grandfather's brother; thus he was a "cousin". Condolences to his children.

So very sad to hear of Mar Silverstein's passing. He was a cousin, by marriage, a dear teacher and had one of the craziest senses of humor! I will never forget him and his traingin of me for my bat mitzvah at Temple Bth El in Gary. Rest peacefully dear Phil.

Cantor Silverstein was my first hebrew school teacher in Gary, Indiana. He used to pick me and 6 other students up for hebrew school in his Ford car He gave me a book about Hillel and inscribed a message in the book that I treasure to this day. I will never forget his kindness to me and to all of my friends in Gary who knew and loved him.

I'm not certain, but if Cantor Philip Silverstein served Temple Beth-El in Gary, Indiana, many years ago, he was one of my Hebrew school teachers. We called him "Mar Silverstein." I entered the school older than the other children but moved up grades quickly to be able to become bar mitzvahed while I was still age 13. This goes back to about 1955. Mar Silverstein was the most delightful and beloved of teachers: caring and thoughtful. He was very interested not just in what he was teaching, but also in the welfare of his pupils. And he had a great sense of humor! He would use humor to make our learning enjoyable, such as when reciting the Hebrew letters, there was "Koof," "Cough," and "Choke." I learned to conduct the service in Hebrew because of Mar Silverstein and Mar Wolf. It was a joy to be one of Mar Silverstein's pupils. I regret not trying to find him these past years. Great teachers, such as Mar Silverstein, will never be forgotten by their lucky pupils. They are an inspiration to all of us.
Love to the family,
